Oceanside Influence Extends Far Past Long Island
One might not expect the relatively small Oceanside community to have broad, sweeping impacts on American culture. However, our town defies those expectations, with multiple notable people and places that have changed the world. These examples are two of the most unique and well-known ways that our community has spread its influence, but with a bit of digging, you may find that many more such examples exist.
The Story of Nathan's in Oceanside
Today, Oceanside is just one of many communities across New York to host a Nathan's restaurant. The distinctive taste and history of the place are attractive to people of all ages and backgrounds. Unlike most other establishments, ours is full of history and was a crucial step in Nathan's rise to global acclaim.
To understand why our town played such a crucial part in the rise of a legend, we have to look back to the very beginnings, over a century ago. Nathan's Famous in Coney Island was a popular spot from the very beginning. To the dismay of many, owner Nathan Handwerker always refused to spread his business to other areas. As a result, imitators popped up everywhere they could, to varying degrees of success.
One of the most famous and beloved hot dog stands sprang up in Oceanside, in the form of the Roadside Rest. Drivers heading either way along Long Beach Road (which has always been a popular and essential thoroughfare) would stop in for a quick meal at the stand. In the early days, it was little more than a shack with a grill. Over time, it developed a reputation for hosting popular music shows and serving up hot dogs of consistently superb quality.
A few decades later, various factors led to the downfall and sale of this local eatery. But, to the great surprise of many, Nathan's son Murray was the buyer, turning the establishment into his project. Within a few years, his father bought the store from him, marking the first time a Nathan's establishment opened up outside Coney Island.
The effect on the community was profound. Commercial establishments flourished near the top-rated franchise, and with their success came the rapid growth of our community. This restaurant's opening marked a turning point not just for Oceanside, but for Nathan's, too – when the family ownership saw the success and popularity of their new store, they knew they had to bring Nathan's Famous to the world.
Another Oceanside Native Changed the World
While it may seem impressive that little Oceanside helped produce one of the world's most well-known restaurant chains, one native of our town grew up to even grander achievements. Those who attended Oceanside high school in the late 60s might remember a certain Robert "Bob" Iger – the same Bob Iger who has served as CEO of Disney for 15 years.
Iger was known as an intelligent kid who loved to read. His father was one of the many thousands of World War Two veterans who settled in Oceanside after being discharged from service. Thus, the early life of one of America's most influential media tycoons began in the same ordinary, comfortable setting that any local knows and loves.
After graduating from Ithaca College with a degree in Television and Radio, Iger got what could only be described as a "dead-end job" working for a local ABC News branch. With an unimpressive wage for a college graduate, his primary duties involved hauling camera and lighting equipment around to prepare sets for filming and broadcasting. However, having been raised by excellent parents and in a sought after schooling environment, Iger soon proved his worth and moved his way into management and administrative positions within the network. By 1989, just fifteen years after being hired in his original entry-level position, Iger was made the chief executive of ABC Entertainment. A few years later, he became the president of the whole network.
While these accomplishments already cemented him as one of Oceanside's most successful natives, his most influential days were yet to come. Under Iger, Disney would grow to include Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilms, and many other cultural icons. It is mainly due to his guidance and direction that American film culture has taken on many of the characteristics we see today.
Even after accomplishing so much, Iger never forgot his roots. While he owns many houses in many places, he still chose to host his wedding just a short drive away from home, in Bridgehampton. With that in mind, it may be safe to say that Disney itself now carries a dash of Long Island influence.
One of the Most Trusted Water Restoration Companies in Oceanside
Whether due to storms, busted pipes, or even an overflowing bathtub, Oceanside residents have many potential threats of water damage to their homes. As a company owned and run by locals, with many of our staff native to the area, SERVPRO takes seriously the mission to protect the community from disasters, large and small.
Small water damages may often escape your notice, or you may consider them too benign to call in help. However, we take these situations seriously, and you should, too. Ignoring a small leak or spill can lead to long-term damages that may end up costing far more to repair later, as opposed to a quick call at the time of the event to a professional damage mitigation company like SERVPRO. We scale our response to the situation's size – many of our projects involve one or two technicians and only a few hours of work.
However, not all water damage can be so benign. Catastrophic flooding can happen due to hurricanes, failing plumbing systems, or even something as simple as leaving a window open during a rainstorm. No matter the cause, we can help. In times of extreme crisis, we can call for backup from other franchises around the region to ensure that we have the workforce and equipment to tackle even the worst situations.
SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside has for years served as one of the most trusted and respected water restoration companies in the Oceanside area. Call our 24/7 emergency line at (516) 536-1801.
