It is also important to know what to do in the event there is an emergency. SERVPRO offers what we call an emergency ready profile (ERP). Cleaning Up Your Oceanside Home After Flood Damage

Cleaning is a vital component of restoration work that our team does for Oceanside homes after disasters like flooding. While there are always multiple concerns to address, including structural degradation, saturation, contamination, and controlled demolition, cleanup, and debris removal are essential services to make this disaster “Like it never even happened.” You can count on the experience and training of our skilled professionals to handle every aspect of this recovery with great care.

Cleanup after flood damage in your Oceanside home occurs at many different stages of recovery, and this is primarily because cleaning happens in many phases itself. Our experienced SERVPRO professionals must contain the spread of damages in the property. We must also address air quality concerns, the potential growth of mold, debris and construction material degradation, and disinfection of the property. Each of these phases is a vital element to restoring your home after flood damage.

Containment is part of the mitigation process, and it can prove beneficial to your flood damaged house in many ways. From preventing the spread of mold spores to reducing harsh odors that can come with standing black and grey water in the property, physical barriers and the use of hydroxyl generators or ozone machines can help keep harmful conditions in the most concentrated areas.

While flooding can often involve the controlled demolition of affected construction materials, someone has to clean up this mess that gets made. Dust and debris are common in demolition and even reconstruction, so our SERVPRO team stays active in reducing the particulates in the air and keeping surfaces wiped clean. Once structural elements get exposed, we can also utilize this opportunity to apply disinfecting sprays and antimicrobial agents to protect the skeleton of your home from damaging conditions like mold or bacterial growth.

Every one of our technicians has a role in the recovery and restoration of a damaged property after a debilitating situation like flooding. You can count on the experienced and certified technicians of our SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside crew to do whatever it takes to get your property back to preloss condition. Give us a call anytime at (516) 536-1801.

Steps for Faster Restoration of Water Damage in Your Oceanside Business

Water spills in business might not often happen since there is minimal interaction with water during daily activities. However, the outcome can be severe if it does happen because a wide range of materials can be damaged, including documents, electronic equipment, and building materials such as carpets. You can deal with water damage better if you involve a professional restorer.

After an incident of water damage in your Oceanside business, the level of destruction can vary greatly depending on the amount of water spilled, the period that passes before mitigation steps start, and the types of materials in your office. If you have carpets or wood on most floors, you need to extract water fast before serious issues such as delaminating or buckling develop. Our SERVPRO technicians can arrive within a few hours and use different equipment to remove water fast. In our inventory, we have:

  • Electrical Submersible Pumps
  • Self-propelled Extractors
  • Water Claws
  • Light Wands
  • High-Pressure Pumps

Extracting pools of standing water damage is just half the task. Other steps are essential to help save items and restore normal operations. Water splashing on documents or high humidity levels occasioned by evaporation can cause the ink to run and other issues. While reversing such effects is impossible, our SERVPRO technicians can help prevent severe deterioration by freezing the wet documents. We also use specialized techniques such as drying through sublimation in which ice changes directly to a gas, thus preventing damages as we dry the affected documents.

Drying all affected areas is also essential because moisture and high humidity levels in the air can cause long-term problems. Drying mainly involves air movements and heat. Our SERVPRO technicians place air movers strategically within your premises for optimal air movement. We also use dehumidifiers, which extract moisture from the air. We also check external factors such as the building envelope, which is the material separating the exterior's interior. A tight envelope means conditions outside the building do not affect the drying process.

Resuming normal operations faster after water damage in your business is essential. Call SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801 to help. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Stay Safe After Oceanside Flood Damage

SERVPRO safety check list SERVPRO puts safety first when it comes to flood removal services. Call our experts at (516) 536-1801.

Our Safety Advice Before and During Flood Removal Services

Our specialists wear heavy protective equipment (PPE) when handling storm flooding. When you see the gear we use, you may understand why we recommend waiting for SERVPRO to clear the area.

Homes in Oceanside with flood damage may harbor hazardous materials, dangerous microbes, and unseen dangers such as shards of glass. For this reason, we enter flooded Oceanside homes wearing heavy rubber boots and gloves, advanced respirators, and sometimes full-body protection suits for situations such as cleaning up after a sewer backup.

Because we would not enter these situations without protective gear, we always recommend residents refrain from doing so, too. We recommend avoiding these situations before an Oceanside SERVPRO representative tells you otherwise:

  • Any case involving sewage cleanup
  • Basement flooding cleanup
  • Flood restoration areas with lots of debris
  • Areas touched by dirty “black” water

By following our safety recommendations throughout the flood damage restoration process, you can be sure that your family will remain safe throughout the crisis. If you must enter a damaged area for any reason, always wear closed-toe shoes and avoid touching any surfaces.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside provides expert damage mitigation and restoration services after flood damage hits the local area. Contact us at (516) 536-1801.

SERVPRO Handles All Underlying Issues during Mold Removal from Oceanside Business Premises

Unseen problems such as a hidden roof leak allow water to penetrate the ceiling space soaking various materials like insulation, wooden trusses, and other structural supports. Unless the intrusion is significant enough, the water can remain in the void for days before discovery. Since black mold starts developing in as little as 48 hours, mold remediation and other services are necessary to restore the business premises.

Under such circumstances, the mold remediation process in your Oceanside business premises presents additional challenges such as removing deteriorated materials, protecting the contents in your work areas, and dealing with the mold. SERVPRO deals with various mold-related issues during our regular cleaning assignments, including:

  • Mold Removal
  • Attic Mold Removal
  • Black Mold Damage Repairs

Our SERVPRO technicians incorporate the protection of your valuables into the removal process. For instance, we have plastic sheets to cover items in working areas before tearing down the ceiling to remove wet and moldy materials. When cleaning the moldy residues, we avoid approaches that can spread them further. We clean surfaces from top to bottom or in the direction of negative airflow machines eliminating settled spores. Using antimicrobial products helps kill spores.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside can help save your business by performing exceptional mold remediation. Call us at (516) 536-1801.

Which Cleaning Methods Remove Odors after Fire Damage in Long Beach Properties?

Fire Illustration Call our experts after you experience a fire disaster, we have the training your home needs after a fire occurs.

SERVPRO Performs Separate Deodorization during House Fire Clean Up Exercises in Long Beach

Fire incidents in properties lead to different offending odors. The odors are emitted by the residues left over from the combustion process. Since residues are deposited on surfaces and embedded in between or within materials, each loss site has several odor sources. The cleanup alone rarely takes care of the offending smells.

SERVPRO seeks to remove all offending odors during fire damage restoration in Long Beach properties. Combining different deodorization techniques is one of the effective ways we use to defeat odors. In most cases, we use a multi-phased odor control process to improve efficiency and avoid using some processes if the initial ones are effective.  The phased process involves:

  • Chemical containment
  • Vapor odor control
  • Thermal fogging

The phased approach helps in many ways. For instance, chemical containment prevents odor molecules from vaporizing into the air. Vapor odor control neutralizes molecules that are already airborne. Fogging spreads counteractants everywhere, including deep within materials, thus pairing with malodor particles, thus neutralizing them. The processes are helpful in different situations, including:

  • Fire damage restoration
  • Smoke remediation
  • House fire clean up

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside uses various approaches to ensure conclusive restoration of fire damage. Call us at (516) 536-1801 when you need help.

SERVPRO Takes Care of All the Nitty-Gritty of Water Damage Remediation in Oceanside Properties

The ease of movement from one point to another is one of the significant considerations when choosing a place to live, which means an area with a good road network is favorable to many people. Even if you rarely pay attention to roads, you are bound to notice if emergency services take time navigating through traffic to reach your property when you need help. Oceanside has several interconnected roads, including Rockaway Avenue, Oceanside Road, Atlantic Avenue, and several others.

Apart from roads, there are several other ways to get in and out of Oceanside. For instance, the final stop for the Long Island Railroad is off Lawson Boulevard. Travel by boat is also viable along the coast or on various waterways within the area.

Open Spaces and Public Areas

When not going to work or staying at home, public places are the next best places to spend time.  An area with numerous public places where you can partake in hiking, picnicking, or other relaxing activities is desirable. In Oceanside, there are several open spaces that people visit, including:

  • Marine Nature Study Area

The area is idyllic and perfect for a relaxing walk as you enjoy the scenery, which includes open grass patches, ponds, and slightly wooded areas. There are numerous bird types in the area, including Ospreys and Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds. Changing tides expose the mudflats creating a unique experience.

  • Oceanside Park

The park is a large waterfront property located on Mahlon Brower Drive. It has several sports fields for handball, tennis, basketball, and volleyball. Its location adjacent to the bay means it is normally windy, although that is not an issue when engaging in physical activities. The stream running on the edge of the park provides an excellent location for kids to explore.

  • Middle Bay Country Club

If your ideal relaxation is playing a round of golf, The Middle Bay Country Club is a perfect location to tee off within Oceanside. The course lies on the southern shore of Long Island, providing unique views of the bay. The course is airy with nice fairways and manicured greens.

SERVPRO Water Removal Services are Available Twenty-Four Hours-a-Day for Oceanside Residents

Oceanside is a collection of small towns and villages known as a hamlet in New York State's Nassau County. The region was first settled upon by English Puritans who originally named the area Christian Hook in 1674. Proximity to Long Beach and the eastern coast saw Christian Hook prosper as a prime spot for oysters and other marine trades, with Mott's Landing's prime location. By 1864 the town was renamed Oceanville, famous for sales of Oyster and other seafood-related products. It was not until 1890 that the hamlet gained its modern title of Oceanside.

From the twentieth century onward, Oceanside fulfilled much of the requirements of a bedroom community. Close connection to New York City via the Long Island Railway ensured that many larger cities' residents moved onto the shore side hamlet. The low-lying flat grounds around Oceanside have made it at a higher risk of extreme weather and flooding issues. These issues were brought to a head in 2012 when Hurricane Sandy had a devastating impact on the local community and commerce. Despite the high flood risk in the area, many residents have decided to stay put with minimal effect on housing prices.

  • The Marine Study Conservation Area on Slice Drive is home to rare birds and wildlife that frequent the east coast of America. An abundance of local fish in the area ensures that the conserved nature continues to prosper while regular tours are available for residents and visitors.
  • The Barrier Brewing Company on New Street has a rotating tap selection of up to twelve craft brews at any one time. One of the earliest Nathan's Famous restaurants is located on Long Beach Road, serving fresh seafood from the bay.
  • Popular streets in Oceanside include Long Beach Road, Oceanside Road, and Atlantic Avenue. Despite primarily being a residential community, these few streets offer some excellent food options and nightlife as well as occasional live entertainment.

Are Mold-Infested Materials Saveable?

3/29/2021 (Permalink)

mold growing around an outlet on a wall Has mold spread through your living areas? Call SERVPRO immediately to investigate the cause and to remediate the mold damage.

SERVPRO Can Often Save High-Value Items from Mold Growth in your Oceanside Home

Mold attaches itself to materials using hyphae- which are vine-like growths. These hyphae also produce new mold spores. The core factor in saving mold-infested materials is the porosity of the material itself. Porous materials generally sustain growth below the surface level, making them impossible to restore.

The advantage of using professional mold removal companies in Oceanside is that a homeowner can ensure their belongings stand the best chance of recovery. SERVPRO technicians are certificated by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certifications body and follow S500 protocol when conducting mold remediation.

  • Molds are a type of microbe or microorganism that require food, water, and temperature to grow.
  • Microbial contamination is a high-risk when performing remediation, often setting up a containment room or decontamination space.
  • Negative air pressure machines work in a similar way to vacuums and can reduce mold spores spreading during remediation.

Reduce the long-term effects of mold infestation. Contact SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside for leading mold removal companies at (516) 536-1801.

SERVPRO Odor Control Technicians (OCT) Can Control and Reduce Persistent Burnt Odors

A property fire can lead to numerous types of damage in the home. Among the hardest to remove without an expert equipment is odor. The odor is a volatile particle that materials release during combustion. The particles can often become embedded in surfaces leading to persistent odors.

Our fire damage restoration services in Long Beach include the removal of unpleasant odors. We use a variety of methods to find and counteract odors. Usually, SERVPRO production technicians identify various sources of odor and remove them from the property. These may be charred items or other types of fire debris. Once odor-causing items are removed, we can thoroughly fumigate the area.

  • Ultra-low volume (ULV) misting equipment can be effective in localized spaces and remain safe for property inhabitants.
  • Air fresheners and other masking agents can often cover an odor until it naturally disperses in two or three weeks.
  • Performing an air exchange can help to ventilate a property with odor issues thoroughly. We can deploy box fans to achieve high-efficiency air exchange.

Get rid of burnt odors in your home. Contact SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside for fire damage odor control at (516) 536-1801.

SERVPRO tracks moisture levels for better results

Storms can arrive quickly and cause damage to your home and yard. Some of the most common damage from storms includes broken windows and doors, damage caused by falling trees or debris, and leaks into the basement or lower floors.

When it comes to cleaning up flood damage in your Oceanside home, it is not enough to rely on how wet the surfaces look. SERVPRO uses a range of tools to look beneath the service. We have several monitoring devices to choose from:

  • Moisture meters measure dampness levels in a range of surfaces such as wood or drywall. We can choose between penetrating or non-penetrating models depending on the type of material.
  • Thermal imaging cameras track the path of moisture across the walls and ceilings.
  • Moisture sensors measure carpets and padding levels and have penetrating probes that let us look at the state of the subfloor.
  • Thermo-hygrometers measure humidity levels in the air.

SERVPRO uses monitoring tools to get an accurate reading of moisture in your home during flood damage remediation.

SERVPRO helps stop mold spores from spreading in Long Beach

If you spot signs of mold damage in your house, it is vital to immediately deal with it. Fungal spores can quickly become airborne, or hitch a ride on your clothes or pet’s fur, and spread throughout your home.

If you are looking for a Long Beach mold remediation company, choose one that understands the importance of containment in fighting mold. SERVPRO trains our technicians to use containment to lessen the spread of mold spores:

  • Thick polyethylene sheeting and duct tape create a barrier.
  • Air scrubbers and negative air machines pull fungus spores from the air.
  • Taping over vents, ducts, and window and door frames means fewer places for mold to escape.

We also set up staging areas, if needed, to lessen the risk of our technicians carrying mold spores on their clothes. Staging areas give us a focused place to don and remove protective equipment and dispose of mold-damaged materials.

When we are finished with mold remediation, we deodorize the area to get rid of musty fungus smells.

For a thorough mold remediation service, call SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801.

SERVPRO is Here To Help After Fire

Oceanside is a delightful hamlet in the state of New York. With a population of just 32,109, it is small enough to explore easily while still being convenient for the larger city of Hempstead.

Despite its name, Oceanside does not directly face the Atlantic. Long Beach Barrier Island and the strait of Reynolds Channel separate the hamlet from the sea. You might wonder why it is called Oceanside in that case. When settlers came to the area in 1674, they named their settlement “Christian Hook” to honor the predominant religion among the settlers. However, residents decided in the early nineteenth century that the town needed a more attractive name, and in 1864, they agreed on Oceanville. After the name became official, residents realized there was already an Oceanville in New York and re-named their town to Ocean Side in 1890. In 1918, townspeople condensed the name to Oceanside, and so it has remained.

Fun for all the family in Oceanside

Oceanside is famous for many things, including fresh oysters and nearby nature walks. One of the most attractive things about the town is how well it caters to families. If you are on a family vacation, you will not be bored. Some of the best attractions in and near Oceanside include:

  • Just Escape offers fun, creative escape room events for all the family. You might find yourself trying to escape the mob or get out of an illusionist’s trap. Just Escape offers games for both kids and adults, and you can even book it as a party venue.
  • Fun Station USA is perfect if the weather is terrible. This indoor attraction features bumper cars, a multi-level maze, laser tag, and arcade games. Kids of all ages can while away many happy hours here.
  • Long Island Children’s Museum offers hands-on learning for kids. There are several permanent exhibits, including the ever-popular soap room filled with bubbles and a place to build sandcastles.

If you are craving some fresh air, take a trip to nearby Hempstead Lake State Park. You can bike or hike the trails or go for a more leisurely walk along the lakeshore. There is also a playground and a wooden carousel to amuse the children.

When it is time to stop for a snack, Oceanside does not disappoint. You can find everything from locally caught seafood to authentic Italian food and a wealth of adorable tea shops to satisfy your appetite.

SERVPRO helps Oceanside homes smell fresh after fire damage

One of the most upsetting parts of fire damage to your home is the lingering smoke smell. Fire odors can be tough to get rid of, and catching a whiff of smoke is an unpleasant reminder of what happened.

SERVPRO understands that your home simply does not feel like your own while it still stinks of smoke. That is why deodorization is a crucial part of our fire damage remediation process. Some of the options are:

  • Odor fighting pellets, granules, or beads, which can mask or absorb odors.
  • Water-based ULV misters to spread odor-fighting agents into every nook and cranny.
  • Thermal fogging distributes a solvent-based agent, which we then leave for several hours or even overnight to do its job.

To get your home smelling fresh after a fire, call SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801.

Fishing, Surfing, Swimming, Soaking Up the Sun at Long Beach

Long Beach resides on a barrier island along the southern shore of Long Island, New York. In addition to Long Beach, there are three other areas – East Atlantic Beach, Atlantic Beach, and Lido Beach. The original residents of the area were the Rockaway Indians. They sold the island to English settlers in 1643. Long Beach Island was used as a base for fishing and farmers harvesting salt grass. For more than two centuries, no one lived on the island year-round. It wasn’t until the mid-1800s when investors began to believe the area was worth developing, especially with access to the beautiful sandy beaches.

Long Island Railroad laid track was from Lynbrook to Long Beach, and a hotel opened along with 27 cottages in 1880. Over 300,000 people came to Long Beach on the railway in the first year to visit the hotel, the beach, and enjoy the water. The area gradually developed further, suffered fires and depression style conditions, and even participated in prohibition-style bootlegging during the 1920s. After a period of decline, Long Beach saw the benefits from urban renewal beginning in the 1980s and continuing in the ’90s.

Hurricane Sandy introduced a setback in 2012, destroying the boardwalk and many homes in the city. The boardwalk reopened in 2013 after $4.4 million was spent on reconstruction of the boardwalk. There was over $250 million in damage to the town. The city is recovering with grants from FEMA and the state.

The Beach at Long Beach

Long Beach is a perfect place to get away and relax on the sand in the sun; that’s why it is affectionately known as the “City by the Sea.” Visitors and locals enjoy the white sandy beaches and the boardwalk, which goes on for 2.2 miles. While some relax and soak up the rays, many try surfing, play volleyball, attend free concerts and enjoy great food at one of the food trucks. You can find people enjoying a walk along the boardwalk, jogging, and even cycling on the promenade.

Resident passes are required for access to the beach area. Visitors can also purchase passes. These passes will cost double the rate of what residents are paying. Health guidelines are being followed, and both residents and visitors should make themselves aware of the requirements at the time of their visit.

Lido Beach

Lido beach is a fun family beach area offering barbequing areas, family picnics for larger gatherings. Live concerts are also offered during the summer and various sports such as basketball, bocce, handball, and volleyball. Fishing is allowed early in the day. Surfing is not permitted on Lido Beach. However, surfers can try their skills at West Lido Beach.

Skudin Surf

Surfing on the beach is one of the most popular activities. Skudin Surf teaches surfing to swimmers of all ages and abilities while having fun and being safe. There are private lessons, group lessons, and camps available. Corporate events and birthday parties are also popular for people looking for something different for their events. Surf instruction is offered at:

  • Long Beach
  • Lido-Nickerson Beach
  • Rockaway Beach

SERVPRO has over 30 years of experience, and the family business is operated by two brothers following in their father’s footsteps. Be safe and learn how to surf the right way.

There are many other activities available in the city, including restaurants, pubs, and art studios.

One of these art studios is Earth Arts of Long Beach.

Earth Arts of Long Beach

Located on West Park Ave in Long Beach, Earth Arts of Long Beach offers adult workshops, kids art classes, summer camps, and private classes. The shop also provides a variety of events for children, teens, and adults. For example:

  • Fall/winter children’s art series,
  • Advanced Artist Series
  • Adult events include Sip N’ Paint with Frank.

Nolan’s Pub, The Maine Course, Minnesota’s are a few pubs and restaurants with excellent reviews in the Long Beach, New York Area.

Parks, Playgrounds Near the Beach

Long Beach is only 2 square miles, with one side bordering Reynolds Channel and the other side facing the Atlantic Ocean. Almost all parks are near the beach. A partial list of parks and playgrounds include:

  • Brookline Playground (NEW),
  • Georgia Park,
  • Veterans Memorial Park
  • Magnolia Playground,
  • Pacific Playground and
  • Clark Street Playground.

All of the parks include nearby tables for enjoying lunch; however, not all include bathrooms. Georgia Park is close to shops and restaurants, and the beach. The park is equipped with play structures, a splash area, and swings. Magnolia Park is located on Magnolia Blvd and the boardwalk close to the concession building and is suitable for toddlers. Pacific Playground, located on Shore Road at Pacific Blvd, has a large playground on the sand offering tables for picnics and several structures.

SERVPRO Water Damage Restoration Technicians Can Save Your Hardwood Floor in Long Beach

Damage to hardwood flooring can be minimized, and floors even returned to the original condition if our technicians can quickly apply water extraction techniques and equipment. Water tends to penetrate the hardwood planks and will be gradually absorbed by the wood if left in place long enough. The hardwood planks may begin to swell, causing cupping, warping, and cracks.

Our team has the equipment to detect and remove water and moisture even in difficult to reach locations before the wood has a chance to absorb sufficient moisture to cause these problems. SERVPRO uses specialized equipment to remove all water and moisture, for example:

  • Moisture sensors and imaging cameras
  • Portable and truck-mounted water extraction equipment for any size challenge
  • Deep extraction tools including matt style for hardwood floors
  • Air movers and dehumidifiers to lower the humidity to ambient levels.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside provides water damage restoration assistance to Long Beach residential and commercial buildings and surrounding areas. Call (516) 536-1801. Our SERVPRO team is ready to respond 24/7 to help with all your water damage restoration needs.

Winter Bird Walks to See Gorgeous Long Beach Wildlife

Have you ever wanted an up-close look at the unique and beautiful winter birds that have lived in Long Beach for far longer than humans? Every Monday this month, with the final opportunity on the 28th, a short drive over to the Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center can get you an excellent chance to see native winter birds from spots hand-picked by Center staff for their diversity and accessibility. These unique Winter Bird Walks should take about an hour, starting at 10:30 in the morning. After the walk concludes, visitors are more than welcome to stick around and take in more of the natural beauty, albeit without the presence of a knowledgeable and accommodating guide.

Many of these birds are seasonal, taking different behaviors and appearances as the snow sets in and their food sources shift. Some may only be present in Long Beach for a few months at a time, heading north once the spring thaw hits. Bring the kids and a set of binoculars if you plan on heading out to see these birds.

One of the Top Water Restoration Companies in Oceanside, One of the Top Towns in America

Oceanside Influence Extends Far Past Long Island

One might not expect the relatively small Oceanside community to have broad, sweeping impacts on American culture. However, our town defies those expectations, with multiple notable people and places that have changed the world. These examples are two of the most unique and well-known ways that our community has spread its influence, but with a bit of digging, you may find that many more such examples exist.

The Story of Nathan's in Oceanside

Today, Oceanside is just one of many communities across New York to host a Nathan's restaurant. The distinctive taste and history of the place are attractive to people of all ages and backgrounds. Unlike most other establishments, ours is full of history and was a crucial step in Nathan's rise to global acclaim.

To understand why our town played such a crucial part in the rise of a legend, we have to look back to the very beginnings, over a century ago. Nathan's Famous in Coney Island was a popular spot from the very beginning. To the dismay of many, owner Nathan Handwerker always refused to spread his business to other areas. As a result, imitators popped up everywhere they could, to varying degrees of success.

One of the most famous and beloved hot dog stands sprang up in Oceanside, in the form of the Roadside Rest. Drivers heading either way along Long Beach Road (which has always been a popular and essential thoroughfare) would stop in for a quick meal at the stand. In the early days, it was little more than a shack with a grill. Over time, it developed a reputation for hosting popular music shows and serving up hot dogs of consistently superb quality.

A few decades later, various factors led to the downfall and sale of this local eatery. But, to the great surprise of many, Nathan's son Murray was the buyer, turning the establishment into his project. Within a few years, his father bought the store from him, marking the first time a Nathan's establishment opened up outside Coney Island.

The effect on the community was profound. Commercial establishments flourished near the top-rated franchise, and with their success came the rapid growth of our community. This restaurant's opening marked a turning point not just for Oceanside, but for Nathan's, too – when the family ownership saw the success and popularity of their new store, they knew they had to bring Nathan's Famous to the world.

Another Oceanside Native Changed the World

While it may seem impressive that little Oceanside helped produce one of the world's most well-known restaurant chains, one native of our town grew up to even grander achievements. Those who attended Oceanside high school in the late 60s might remember a certain Robert "Bob" Iger – the same Bob Iger who has served as CEO of Disney for 15 years.

Iger was known as an intelligent kid who loved to read. His father was one of the many thousands of World War Two veterans who settled in Oceanside after being discharged from service. Thus, the early life of one of America's most influential media tycoons began in the same ordinary, comfortable setting that any local knows and loves.

After graduating from Ithaca College with a degree in Television and Radio, Iger got what could only be described as a "dead-end job" working for a local ABC News branch. With an unimpressive wage for a college graduate, his primary duties involved hauling camera and lighting equipment around to prepare sets for filming and broadcasting. However, having been raised by excellent parents and in a sought after schooling environment, Iger soon proved his worth and moved his way into management and administrative positions within the network. By 1989, just fifteen years after being hired in his original entry-level position, Iger was made the chief executive of ABC Entertainment. A few years later, he became the president of the whole network.

While these accomplishments already cemented him as one of Oceanside's most successful natives, his most influential days were yet to come. Under Iger, Disney would grow to include Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilms, and many other cultural icons. It is mainly due to his guidance and direction that American film culture has taken on many of the characteristics we see today.

Even after accomplishing so much, Iger never forgot his roots. While he owns many houses in many places, he still chose to host his wedding just a short drive away from home, in Bridgehampton. With that in mind, it may be safe to say that Disney itself now carries a dash of Long Island influence.

One of the Most Trusted Water Restoration Companies in Oceanside

Whether due to storms, busted pipes, or even an overflowing bathtub, Oceanside residents have many potential threats of water damage to their homes. As a company owned and run by locals, with many of our staff native to the area, SERVPRO takes seriously the mission to protect the community from disasters, large and small.

Small water damages may often escape your notice, or you may consider them too benign to call in help. However, we take these situations seriously, and you should, too. Ignoring a small leak or spill can lead to long-term damages that may end up costing far more to repair later, as opposed to a quick call at the time of the event to a professional damage mitigation company like SERVPRO. We scale our response to the situation's size – many of our projects involve one or two technicians and only a few hours of work.

However, not all water damage can be so benign. Catastrophic flooding can happen due to hurricanes, failing plumbing systems, or even something as simple as leaving a window open during a rainstorm. No matter the cause, we can help. In times of extreme crisis, we can call for backup from other franchises around the region to ensure that we have the workforce and equipment to tackle even the worst situations.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside has for years served as one of the most trusted and respected water restoration companies in the Oceanside area. Call our 24/7 emergency line at (516) 536-1801.

Waterfront Properties in Oceanside Can Be at High Risk of Mold Damage.

Oceanside, NY skyline Call our team of professionals if your property is damaged by mold!

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside has Applied Microbial Remediation Technicians (AMRT) to Clear and Disinfect your Property.

The communities in Oceanside are made up of ex-urbanites seeking a quieter life along the coast's serene beaches overlooking Long Beach. Train journeys into New York City are around 45 minutes from Long Beach, but many residents choose to remain in Oceanside's suburban comfort. Being in a close-knit community does not mean a secular one with residents welcoming road-trippers to our backyard beaches all year round. Despite a population of just 35,000 people, there is no shortage of arts, cultural events, and things to do along the coast. The eateries are diverse and specialize in fresh fish caught from the bay, while a trip up to the iconic Long Beach is a feast of fairway food and drink.

Whale watching can be observed from the edges of the nearby Long Beach, or you can take one of the many chartered barges from the local marina to catch a glimpse of dolphins and whales that frequent the bay in search of fresh fish. Oceanside is a relaxing getaway from the bustling New York but retains thriving cultural art, music, and surf culture. Our culinary fame comes from the delicious Oceanside oysters brought in droves from fishing vessels into the local waterfront restaurants and cafes. It was our oysters that led to the name Oceanside which came into being in the mid-19th century, changing over from the last name, Christian Hook.

    •    Whale watching tours set sail from the south shore near Oceanside with chartered companies, including American Princess Cruises and Long Island Whale Watching by Fire Island.
    •    The Marine Nature Study Area offers 52-acres of conservation projects that support the growth and study of wild sea life.
    •    From Oceanside, the beaches stretch from the Point Lookout across Long Beach and finally finishing at Atlantic to complete the south shore.

The Damaging Effects of Hurricane Sandy on Oceanside's Shoreline Community
The biggest natural disaster in living memory to strike our community was Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Hurricane Sandy's impact was mudslides, property damages, floods, and winds, which lasted for 9-days, killing over 100 people on the East Coast. The cost of property damages resulting from this super-storm is estimated to be $70 billion. Here in Oceanside, the southern side of town became utterly submerged in floodwaters. Who fixes a property after a fire in Oceanside?

10/18/2020 (Permalink)

Fire flames isolated on black background Contact SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801 for assistance.

SERVPRO Provides Qualified Restoration Technicians to Oceanside Residents with Property Fire Damage.

Are property fires common?
Many residents of Oceanside experience a property fire at some point during their ownership. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recorded 1,348,500 fires in the single year of 2009. Over a third of these fires were structural, which can require extensive repair and reconstruction. Our team of qualified technicians is here to help you overcome the damage implications of a fire quickly and hassle-free. Using our industry-leading training and cutting-edge equipment, we can often save the structure and build assembly elements without removing and replacing items. We can work closely with your insurance adjuster to produce an accurate estimate and provide an initial inspection of damages within just four hours from notification of loss.

What are the common causes of property fires?
Housefires are mainly caused by cigarettes, heating equipment malfunctions, electrical systems, and cooking. It can be easy to leave stove or fan heater unattended, but items can combust in a matter of minutes. Depending on your Oceanside home's decor, these flames can quickly catch onto structural elements that are primarily made from woods. Plywood or gypsum board, in particular, can ignite rapidly, leading to a property fire. SERVPRO recommends practicing fire safety at all times when in the home to ensure a reduction in property fires. However, when these do occur, you can contact us throughout the day and night to arrange a restoration service. Many properties that suffer from the fire have cosmetic damages rather than permanent ones, which means, provided the fire is contained, that the chances of a successful restoration are high.

Who is involved in fire damage restoration?
    •    A professional restoration technician that can put in place a cleaning and repair plan for your home by examining the site
    •    An insurance company that issued you a home policy for fire-related damages and foots the bill for fire restoration
    •    An insurance adjuster who works as a go-between for production technicians and insurance companies to produce an accurate estimate and guidance for restoration

Why are professional restoration technicians useful?
A fire damage restoration technician's role in your Oceanside home is to provide advice to insurance adjusters regarding claims and deals directly with you during the service.  We understand that house fires are traumatic, and, as a homeowner, you need the situation resolved as quickly as possible. Our restoration technicians are here to provide you with the assistance you need to get your home back to its preloss condition.  By doing so, you can return to your personal and professional lives. We believe a satisfactory restoration service requires empathetic, compassionate, and expert communication between the three parties involved with clearing and restoring a home.

Is fire damage restoration difficult?
Working as a professional production technician or crew chief can be challenging. Every property fire we face presents different challenges and requires other methods or equipment to overcome. We want to get your home back to a normal condition, which can mean working through evenings, on weekends, and through long shifts. In the immediate aftermath of a fire, a tremendous amount of work must be undertaken to mitigate potential losses in a small space of time. Removing smoke residues and bringing malodors under control can be a grueling task, but getting customers home back to preloss condition is fulfilling once the hard work is complete.

What does fire restoration aim to achieve?
    •    A report on the extent of losses in the home and efficient interactions with an insurance adjuster to produce an accurate estimate
    •    Quickly separating what can and cannot be restored at a property and minimizing losses through effective mitigation.
    •    Producing high quality of restoration to provide lasting satisfaction for homeowners undergoing the process of fire losses

How does a fire restoration technician approach fire damage?
Producing high quality of restoration requires a versatile approach to deal with the variables of fire losses. Variable factors in restoration can include the type of building, its assembly, and the severity of the fire losses. To tackle these issues, technicians need a solid grasp of how fires spread damages, the process of restoration, inspecting various losses, the deodorization of smoke odors. We use descriptive details from your initial notification of loss to pack our trucks with the required equipment from industrial foggers to cleaning agents and mechanical tools. We may also provide expert advice on moving out contents, restoring contents, and coordinating with subcontractors to return your home to preloss conditions.

What training and qualifications do fire restoration technicians need?
    •    Employee Certification Training Program (ECTP)which is based on our extensive fire restoration manual
    •    Industry certifications such as those issued by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certifications body
    •    Practical experience working under the guidance of senior crew chiefs

Getting back to your everyday life after a fire can be challenging. Contact SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801 for assistance.

Is it Possible to Dry Wall Cavities in the Home?

10/7/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Equipment SERVPRO's state of the art equipment helps us to provide excellent service. We leave your home only when it is dry and ready for a build back.

SERVPRO Mitigates Losses Through Water Damage Restoration and Can Help Rescue Long Beach Homes.

How does water get into wall cavities?

Wall cavities can be particularly susceptible to long-term damage in your Long Beach home. Once water enters an enclosure like a wall cavity, it can take a long time to dry or lead to secondary injuries like mold growth. These issues can occur through plumbing issues or structural issues. Sometimes humid outdoor air can condensate within cavities leading to a water damage issue. These issues are typically identifiable by discoloration in paint or visible signs of cracking on interior walls. SERVPRO applied structural drying (ASD) technicians can help to remedy wall cavity issues in your home.

What equipment is useful for dealing with cavity damages?

General construction equipment to gain access to the cavity.

Adapted air-moving equipment to dry out a cavity.

Specialist systems like injectidry equipment.

Is it possible to ventilate a wall cavity?

Many different equipment types can help cavity water damage restoration in your Long Beach home. Drying and ventilating equipment usually feature vents attached to air-movers or flex-hoses that are attached to a blower. These equipment are generally applied by drilling discrete holes beneath the baseboard of a wall. From here, the equipment can circulate dry air into the cavity to dry it effectively. SERVPRO technicians can use multiple air-movement equipment to tackle cavity damages in your home.

What are the critical aspects of using air-movers?

Ensure that the vents for air-movers are clear without any blockages to prevent overheating and equipment damage.

Control electrical hazards by using Ground Flow Circuit Interrupters (GFCI), which can prevent hydro electric malfunction.

Check air-mover motors are thermally protected with three-prong plugs before using.

Restoring wall cavities can be a time-consuming task without specialized equipment. Contact SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801.

Is a Small Water Spot on a Ceiling Indicative of Damage in Long Beach?

9/27/2020 (Permalink)

Close-up Photo Of Flooded Floor In Kitchen From Water Leak SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801 knows you have choices for water mitigation.

SERVPRO technicians bring advanced equipment to give you the answers you need regarding water damage in your Long Beach home

Your Long Beach home may be trying to tell you something is wrong when water spots show up on the ceiling. It is best to bring in a professional water damage restoration company to determine the nature of the cleanup that needs to happen. The stains left by moisture on sheetrock can mean multiple things are amiss, including:
    •    A leak in the roof allowing water into the home
    •    Plumbing issue
    •    In multi-family residences, the neighbor has a water damage issue affecting your home

What Happens if Water Mitigation Gets Delayed?
When you have the signs of your Long Beach property needing professional water mitigation by the trained techs of SERVPRO, there should be no delay. The longer that the structural elements get exposed to water, the more damage that occurs. The stains left behind can turn into deteriorated sheetrock, ruined floor tiles, and the need to get the water in your carpet extracted and dried to save it. When the cleanup gets delayed, it can lead to a host of issues such as musty odors that permeate porous items, and it can work to create a sustainable environment for mold growth.

After removing the water in the home, SERVPRO technicians carefully monitor the drying process to ensure that pre-set drying goals get attained. The plans are predetermined to lower the interior humidity levels below the point that airborne mold spores germinate and grow. This tactic and the use of professional antimicrobial cleaners and sealants keep the potential for mold colony infestation at bay.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801 knows you have choices for water mitigation. That is why their technicians are available 24/7 and strive to deliver the best outcome for every restoration service job.

How Can I Limit or Prevent Potential Flood Damage at My Long Beach House?

9/12/2020 (Permalink)

House Flooded Remember, if you ever need assistance preparing for or cleaning up after a flood, your neighbors at SERVPRO are here to help.

You Can Lessen or Prevent Flood Damage Simply by Making it More Difficult for Floodwaters to Enter Your Long Beach Home and Ensuring that It Has an Effective Drainage System.

Long Beach has long served as a weekend getaway destination for those working in nearby New York City.  As such, several city residents have purchased beach houses on the barrier island for their weekend leisure activities.  The seaside community is super convenient, as it is only a few miles from JFK Airport and the NYC limits, and offers residents seemingly endless fun in the sun during the warmer months.  With that said, it can also be quite an inconvenient location when the big annual storms hit.  Throughout the year, hurricanes and Nor’easters routinely pound this community and others on Long Island’s South Shore.  As a result, the narrow barrier islands, battered by strong winds and their related storm surges, often become inundated by floodwaters.

How Can I Make My Home More Resistant to Stormwaters?
SERVPRO, a local service that remediates flood damage in Long Beach, offers some advice for safeguarding your home from flooding stormwaters.  The following are some of their suggestions for making your home more resistant to these bringers of disaster:

    •    Inspect your home’s foundation before storms strike and repair any cracks or other damage found to make it more difficult for floodwaters to enter your residence
    •    Examine your roof and fix any damage you discover, repairing holes and replacing missing tiles, to prevent rainwater from leaking into your home
    •    Make sure that your gutters and drainage systems are in good working order so that stormwaters are drained away from your structure
    •    Safeguard your home from windblown water by boarding up all windows, doors, and other openings

While it is exceedingly difficult, if not impossible, to prevent all storm-related waters from finding their way into your residence, the actions listed above should substantially lessen your overall flood damage.

What Can I Do Around My House to Make it Less Susceptible to Flood Damage?
After you have fortified your house against storm damage, there are some things you can do in your yard to further enhance its security from the effects of natural disasters.  SERVPRO professionals advise doing these things to make your yard safer during storms:

    •    Strategically sandbag the perimeter of your yard to divert floodwaters away from it and your home
    •    Remove dead trees and cut any tree limbs that may fall on or otherwise damage your house
    •    Bring lawn furniture and any other objects that may become flying projectiles in a storm inside
    •    Pick up and properly discard any lawn debris

These simple steps should further protect your home from exterior damage that may allow stormwaters to penetrate your residence.

Why is Your Neighborhood SERVPRO a Good Service to Call to Plan For or Remediate Flood Damage?
There are several reasons why SERVPRO is an excellent option when you need to plan for or deal with floodwater damage.  These reasons, which concern everything from our firm reputation to our innovative methods and high-tech equipment, include:

    •    Company technicians have specific credentialing in applied structural drying, water damage restoration, and applied microbial remediation

As these characteristics indicate, we have developed a remediation business that utilizes all the latest advanced training and technology to provide customers with the most effective service possible.

Living or weekending in Long Beach is often a pleasure, but it does come with an additional cost if you own property here.  At almost any time of the year, there is always a potential for strong storms and flooding.  Since our city is on a narrow, low-lying island, it does not take much rainwater or storm surge to inundate local homes.  With all that said, however, there are measures you can take to lower your risks of incurring catastrophic flood damage.  Simply by following some of the simple advice offered here, you can often avert the most serious damage.

Remember, if you ever need assistance preparing for or cleaning up after a flood, your neighbors at SERVPRO are here to help.  Call SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801 whenever you need us.

What can wallpaper or wall murals tell me about mold?

Mold is a fungus that grows wherever it finds moisture and a food source. Drywall, plaster, and wallpaper are all viable food sources. Mold on or behind your wallpaper might cause:

  • A musty odor

If you see mold growth, you know you need remediation. However, peeling, stains, or an odor are also signs, so SERVPRO recommends that you take action if you see any of those symptoms.

What should I do if I need mold removal?

If you suspect a mold problem in your salon, call us immediately. We can send a team of trained mold specialists to inspect and assess your property and carry out professional remediation. Our technicians can:

  • Test for moisture (mold loves moisture) using moisture meters and probes
  • Set up containment so mold spores cannot travel throughout your salon
  • Remove visible mold colonies utilizing a range of antimicrobial products and actions
  • Dry the area to discourage further mold growth
  • Deodorize afterward to ensure your salon smells fresh

What if the wallpaper cannot be salvaged?

Our teams can help with re-hanging wallpaper if necessary. It is always our aim to restore rather than replace, so you can rest assured that we will not suggest replacing the wallpaper unless needed.

It can be frustrating to view your Oceanside commercial property post-fire or after a water damage event from storms or plumbing problems. Even more overwhelming is handling the cleanup and repairs. In all of these situations, mainly if mold is part of the equation, to outsource the cleaning and remediation of the damage to a professional restoration services firm. Finding a local company can start on the Internet, asking friends and employees who they have used in the past and talking to your insurance agent. SERVPRO has a handy, free app that business owners can use to notate the location of access points, where the water main and electrical panel are located as well as who to notify in case of an on-property disaster.

Can the Use of Commercial Restoration Companies Save Money?

In many cases local Oceanside restoration companies are a smart move, SERVPRO technicians save commercial property owners the cost of replacement through their fast action and advanced techniques for cleaning all types of damage. There are numerous benefits to outsourcing the cleanup of your building and contents:

  • Time to handle on-going operations of your business such as marketing and getting the word out your structure has gotten closed for restoration
  • Peace of mind that all the water, mold or fire damage will get addressed
  • Your property gets returned to a sanitary standard even if the problem was a large-scale sewage backup
  • Removal of foul odors

Water Detection Equipment

Finding all areas of water migration within a structure is impossible to do solely through visual efforts. SERVPRO techs bring equipment that can allow the techs to look under floors and behind walls to determine all areas of water collection. This initial scoping action ensures the complete area that needs extraction and drying gets identified and handled. Specific devices get used on different surfaces, and some are for measuring interior humidity levels to assist in setting drying goals such as:

  • Moisture sensors
  • Thermal imaging cameras
  • Moisture meters
  • Thermo-hygrometers

Professional Water Removal Equipment Makes a Difference in the Outcome

SERVPRO techs bring several types of powerful extraction equipment to every job site in their green service vans. The portable pumps are one of the most familiar kinds of devices seen by most people. These units are easy to maneuver and have the ability to change wand heads to a squeegee or weighted for use on tile and carpet.

Controlled Demolition Tactics Can Save Portions of a Structure

SERVPRO team members commit to saving property owners as much time and money during the mitigation of fire, water, or mold damage. This can happen as articles from within the commercial property get cleaned for reuse to specific controlled demo actions such as the removal of a portion of sheetrock that wicked water, but the entire wall did not need to come down. The removal of the baseboards so the extraction and drying equipment can dry around the floor joints, while the baseboards get dried in another area for re-installation.

Insulation Cleaning and Re-Installation

Another way to save money is through the restoration and reuse of fiberglass insulation. If the insulation has water damage, but it is not from contaminated water and mold is not present, SERVPRO techs can collect it in a specially fitted vacuum bag for cleaning through their proprietary methods.

Fire Damage Should Get Outsourced to Professionals Every Time

Soot is an irritant and can affect different people in different ways. Water is often present and compounds the problem within the structure. SERVPRO techs know how to contain the soot while they get rid of the water, charred items, and eliminate the smoke damage and odors.

Final Touches as Needed                                                                               Once the technicians complete the restoration services, the crew chief takes the property owner through the job site and goes over the actions taken by SERVPRO. This review goes over areas and items cleaned, disposed of, and the needed repairs to bring the building back to its original condition before the damage happened.

If the technicians needed to perform any temporary repairs such as tarping a roof or boarding up any part of the facility, the property owner gets informed of any rebuilding or fixes needed.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801 serves the community as one of the top choices among commercial restoration companies. The trained and certified technicians can handle any type of cleanup needed and leave the property, "Like it never even happened."

3D concept of contemporary interior flooding SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801is available 24/7 to come to your property and clean up any size flood damage.

SERVPRO technicians can get the floodwater and mud out of your Long Beach home quickly

While homeowners try to plan against natural disasters such as flash floods or storm damage, there is no way to be 100% insulated from it happening. Microbursts and heavy thunderstorms occur, and when floodwater invades a Long Beach home, it needs addressing as fast as possible to limit the loss. This is one type of home disaster you should outsource to a restoration services company for the best outcome, including getting the muddy water out of your floors using professional equipment such as portable pumps or for large jobs, truck-mounted units.

Why is Flood Damage So Much More Harmful Than a Pipe Burst?

There is no real comparison between Long Beach properties with plumbing issues and flood damage. Water that erupts from a pipe is drinking water quality, and as long as it gets cleaned up within 24 hours, it poses no real health threat. Floodwater is a different story. The things typically found in this water type include:
    •    Mud and debris
    •    Contaminants such as sewage or chemicals
    •    Bacteria

In other words, it is filthy and can be harmful to come into contact with and should not get handled without full-body protective clothing.

Floodwater tends to hit flooring of all types the hardest and carpet in particular fares poorly when it absorbs this type of water, particularly so if sewage or mud is part of the equation. In these cases, the techs extract the moisture from the carpet and cut it into strips for safe handling during disposal. Once the techs complete the extraction, drying, and any needed controlled demo, they work to ready the property for repairs to return the home to its preloss condition.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801is available 24/7 to come to your property and clean up any size flood damage. The techs have advanced equipment and extensive training to ensure your home gets the best outcome.

The timing of any flood devastation is, of course, up in the air, but predicting the types of harm that might befall your business is far easier for a disaster restorer to assess. Working with an experienced and reputable flood damage contractor ahead of time permits seasoned experts to inspect your business's physical workspace and learn a bit about your operations. This data helps create a plan that can ensure fast implementation and completion if the worst does happen.

Tell Me More -- Is the Plan "One Size Fits All" or Can We Individualize It?

SERVPRO offers potential restoration customers the chance to collaborate on an Emergency READY Profile and Plan (ERP). We urge our commercial customers to consider taking the first step and call for a no-obligation assessment. The preparation will give you peace of mind and our crews essential information on how to anticipate your needs during a flooding event and the best ways to meet them.

What Happens During the ERP Assessment? What Should I Do to Prepare?

One of our experienced project managers drops by your site armed with a mobile device capable of taking clear photographs of your interior and exterior spaces. We walk through your facility, noting utility shut-offs and equipment placement, plumbing, gas, and other utility lines. We review storage and inventory areas and offices, restrooms, meeting rooms, and break rooms. If you have available a blueprint that displays a current and accurate description of your space and the functions of each subspace, please share it with us. Be prepared to explain the daily, nightly, and overnight routine in your business, so we have a firm understanding of what happens at different times in your commercial building.

What Happens After the Walk Through?

During our review of your space, we are looking for potential disaster "hot spots," and thinking of ways you can alter your use of problematic areas to avoid damage and improve outcomes. We reach out with practical tips that could minimize the impact of a flooding event on your business. Examples include:

  • Use of protective storage bins for porous materials
  • Moving of vulnerable materials, including business documents, to upper stories of your building or off-site
  • Revising storage placement and methods of inventory
  • Cleanup of areas near utility shut-offs and spaces where overland flooding is likely to breach the walls of your property
  • Repair and maintenances of roofing and gutter and downspout configurations
  • Placing equipment and furnishings on blocks above projected flood levels
  • Installation or maintenance of a sump pump system

Can I Add Details to the ERP?

Use our mobile app to fill in details such as:

  • Establishing our firm as your disaster mitigation and restoration provider
  • Laying out a line of command for work authorization, including designating other to act on your behalf if you are unavailable for any reason
  • Sharing priority contact information, including the vendors and contractors who designed your space and systems

Once you complete your additions, the ERP is available to our management and crews as a concise digital document with critical space-specific information and advance solutions. The whole file permits you and SERVPRO to be "Ready for whatever happens."

A Storm Broke the Windows and Caused Flood Damage in My Property. Who Can Help Me to Restore it?

7/7/2020 (Permalink)

ligntning and heavy rain on blue background When storms damage your home, SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside is available.

Reach Out to SERVPRO Technicians for Effective Storm Flood Damage Restoration in Long Beach

A storm can cause costly damage to a home, including wind damage, flood damage, and structural problems. If left unattended for an extended period, floodwater can cause mold growth, wood rot, and health hazards, among other issues to the residents. Seeking professional help from SERVPRO within 24 hours can prevent secondary damage in your Long Beach property.

What should I be cautious?

When there is storm flood damage in your Long Beach property, it is vital to be cautious to avoid injury or infection. Water conducts electricity and can cause electrocution hazards in your property. Therefore, switch off the main power supply to your property. Also, minimize movements in the flooded area since the water may have hidden hazards like broken window glass, nails, sticks, and broken electronics. If you must move from one point to another, wear waterproof boots.

How can you handle contamination caused by sewage?

Floodwater can contain sewage because it increases pressure on sewage systems, which could cause sewage back-ups. If sewage is visible in your home, our decontamination service can involve:

  • Extracting as much water as possible
  • Thoroughly cleaning debris or other solid contaminants
  • Taking measures to dry the contaminated areas
  • Applying disinfectants to kill microbes

Our technicians have access to advanced equipment and tools that help us conduct the drying process effectively—floodwater tags along with debris and dirt of various sizes. Therefore, we use equipment that can pass water together with the waste.

When dealing with contaminated water, it is usually impossible to restore carpets. Our technicians can remove your carpet and padding. SERVPRO technicians can use a knee kicker, power stretcher, razor knife or duckbill knife, and stair tool to remove the carpet and padding.

Why does my property feel cold and damp?

Even after the extraction of excess water, moisture is still high in the air. We can use multiple axial air movers to drive in dry, hot air from outside and replace the affected area's moist air. The machine extracts moisture even in the hard to reach areas. The air movers deliver lower pressure at higher volume giving them the ability to cover a wide area of affected materials.

It is vital to take immediate action after a flooding incident to save as much property as possible. Contact SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801 to get your property to its preloss condition. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

How Can We Continue Serving Customers in Oceanside As We Restore Water Damage?

6/27/2020 (Permalink)

line of electronic slot machines in casino Water damage and casinos are a bad mix. Make sure to contact SERVPRO if your casino is facing such a situation.

SERVPRO Can Help Perform Water Damage Restoration at Your Oceanside Casino with Minimal Inconvenience to Your Customers

Since people visit casinos to hang out or for their regular fix of the gaming thrill, closure of your facility can leave many disappointed. Water intrusions might lead to short-term closure or leave damages that ruin the reputation of your Oceanside Casino if not appropriately managed.

What solutions minimize inconveniences for business operations?

The effort put into commercial water damage restoration in Oceanside properties depends on the loss extent. For mild water spills, extraction, and drying of wet areas, is all it takes. For extreme losses, elaborate procedures, including demolition of parts of the property, might be necessary. For a business to remain operational, a couple of steps can help:

  • Setting up containments to limit the spread of damages
  • Placement of safety signs on risky areas including slick surfaces
  • Expediting the restoration process

Moisture migration or soiling of unaffected areas by people as they move around can amplify the loss unnecessarily, so it is crucial to strike a balance between locking people out and allowing full access. Some restoration processes, such as cleaning, can also damage items like gaming tables. Physical barriers, especially the 6-mil plastic sheets our SERVPRO technicians use to contain the wet areas help limit the spread of materials or accidental damage to contents during restoration.

What challenges can impede restoration?

Security concerns in some sections of the casino, such as the gaming rooms, can impede the restoration of water damage without closing down because of the need to monitor players constantly. Solutions such as setting up barriers to allow partial access cannot work. However, our SERVPRO technicians can expedite cleaning and drying to finish restoration faster. We accomplish that by using sophisticated equipment such as:

  • Truck-mounted water extractors
  • Desiccant dehumidifiers for drying
  • Self-propelled deep water extractors for carpeted areas

Restoration of water damage should balance between immediate and future needs. Call SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801 to help resolve an incident at your facility.

How Do Content Management Technicians Protect My Belongings After a Fire?

6/11/2020 (Permalink)

stack of cardboard boxes SERVPRO Provides Oceanside Property Owners with Fire Loss Cleanup and Restoration--Even Pack-Out Services

Our restoration professionals can clean and restore damaged items on-site and in our Oceanside SERVPRO facility

Many actions must get taken to recover an Oceanside home after a fire loss incident, but our SERVPRO professionals have gotten trained to provide a fast and confident response. Fire & Smoke Restoration Technicians (FSRT) accredited through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) can provide a wide range of corrective actions as soon as we arrive at a fire-damaged property.

Recovering fire damage in Oceanside homes and businesses can mean several different individual tasks. While homeowners might consider the most vital efforts to be approached like fire debris removal and clearing harmful soot from surfaces, it is equally important to consider what can and should happen to the contents of your home. Protecting your belongings involves careful assessments and choosing the ideal restoration approach based on affected materials, the damaged area, and the personnel involved.

What Items Require Restoration and Recovery?

A thorough inspection and assessment can determine whether or not specific contents within your home require more concentrated cleaning and restoration. In many situations, outer lying personal belongings in less affected areas of the residence can be relocated elsewhere on the property to prevent damages. There are some specific conditions following fire losses that can require on-site restoration or more direct off-site recovery solutions at our SERVPRO facility. Some of these conditions include:

  • Residue/Soot Damage – Residues from wet smoke or soot can adhere to the surfaces of your belongings and become a threatening presence. With the acidic composition of soot, prolonged exposure can stain or destroy surfaces beneath the residue without prompt action.
  • Odor Damages – Smoke odors can penetrate multiple areas of the damaged house after a fire loss. They can also become embedded and trapped in fabrics, textiles, carpeting, and specific contents of your home.
  • Water Damage – Extinguishment is a valuable phase during a fire emergency, but it can leave many areas of the house contending with water damage. Saturated personal belongings require advanced drying efforts to return to their original conditions.

Can You Help Protect Damaged Belongings?

Before our professionals arrive, depending on the potential hazards in the property, it is possible to relocate some of your possessions to safer areas of the house. If environmental or structural hazards exist, it is not advisable for you or other members of your family to remain on the property. Most fire recovery situations require our experienced professionals to don complete personal protective equipment from Tyvek coverall suits and gloves to respirators and boots.

What On-Site Recovery Options Exist?

It is always the objective of our technicians to restore your possessions on-site. We can appreciate how unnerving and overwhelming it can be to entrust your belongings to our team for off-site restoration, so we work to limit the number of items that meet these criteria when possible. Several direct strategies can prevent your belongings from being relocated by our pack-out procedure, including the following:

  • Surface Cleaning – Light soiling can often be wiped clean with our potent cleaning products. Assessments into the thickness and severity of residues and soiling must happen to ensure that smearing and staining do not occur.
  • Deodorization – Smoke and burning odors are not uncommon for the belongings in your house after a fire. With multiple restoration tools, including thermal foggers and hydroxyl generators, we can work to neutralize and eliminate these foul odors in the environment and the affected items.
  • Drying – Because water damage can be a common threatening condition for your possessions after a fire loss, drying these belongings on-site can save time and money on more direct restoration efforts at our SERVPRO facility.

Is Pack-Out the Best Approach for Content Restoration?

While it is not always the most sought-out approach in our restoration arsenal, pack-out focuses on the efforts necessary to overcome substantial losses to the contents in your home. With soot and odor threats, especially, there are advantages to the advanced stationary tools and areas of our warehouse for fire-damaged items. Some of the benefits of off-site recovery include:

  • Ultrasonic Tank (Soot Cleaning)
  • Ozone Chamber (Odor Removal)
  • Safe, Climate-Controlled Storage

Fire losses can be widespread threats in your property, which can quickly impact many of the belongings and possessions throughout the house. With experienced content management professionals, we can offer both on-site and off-site restoration solutions to help. How Can Kitchen Sink Pipe Leaks Affect My Home?

6/3/2020 (Permalink)

Kitchen Sink We know the steps to get your Oceanside kitchen back from water damage.

Restoration Pros Perform Rapid Response Water Removal for Oceanside Homes

The kitchen is a particularly vulnerable area for home water damage, even in drier locales like Oceanside. Plumbing leaks and appliance mishaps alone can cause damage in hard-to-reach areas like wall cavities, cabinetry, and behind appliances like dishwashers and refrigerators.

SERVPRO performs water removal services for your Oceanside kitchen that are compliant with restoration industry benchmarks and SERVPRO’s best practices. Technicians receive a comprehensive education in the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC)'s standards to ensure that home mitigation and restoration are done to code.

How Kitchen Sink Leaks Cause Structural Damage

  • Wood rot in the under-sink cabinets. Contrary to popular belief, wood rots not from moisture exposure, but from fungal growth that thrives on eating wood, many of which lie dormant in the wood itself.
  • Warping, cupping, and buckling wood. While wood naturally expands and contracts from moisture exposure, absorbing unusually high amounts of water causes wood to deform and lose its structural integrity over time. Check if the sink cabinet’s surface is noticeably bowed or uneven.
  • An ideal environment for mold growth. Mold thrives in dark, damp areas of the home like underneath sinks. The sugars and proteins in wood also provide plenty of organic material for fungi to eat.

SERVPRO Sanitizes and Dries Water-Damaged Cabinetry

SERVPRO technicians prepare cabinets for drying with a variety of tools and techniques:

  • The toe-kick may be removed to drill holes into cabinetry for ventilation.
  • Portable extraction tools, in tandem with moisture measurement tools, help restore your cabinets to appropriate moisture levels for drying.
  • Centrifugal air movers and dehumidifiers work together to dry wood to its appropriate moisture content.

My Floors Sustained Damage in A Fire, How Do I Fix Them?

5/22/2020 (Permalink)

A fire burning on hardwood floors. SERVPRO can help you through every step of your Oceanside fire damage.

SERVPRO Uses a Variety of Techniques, Equipment, and Products to Repair Your Oceanside Floors

Fires can cause damage throughout your Oceanside home. Unfortunately, damage often appears from the ceiling to the floors after a fire. Smoke residue manages to work its way into even the smallest nooks and crannies. Recovering after a fire can be complicated, requiring multiple restorations and deodorization methods.

Will I Have to Rip Out My Floors?

SERVPRO Technicians Make Every Attempt to Fix Your Flooring After a Fire

Dealing with fire damage throughout your Oceanside home can be completely overwhelming, especially when it is widespread. Restoration after a fire is multifaceted in that you need to remove and clean smoke residue, deodorize, and repair structural damage. Your flooring may be one of the last things that you notice if there is more widespread damage. If you have vinyl or wood flooring, smoke residue can settle into the porous surfaces and become almost impossible to remove through vacuuming, scrubbing, or other conventional methods. Our technicians may use rotary floor machines to strip damaged finish or deep clean carpets.

How Do Rotary Floor Machines Work?

  • Brushes and drive blocks attached to the bottom of the machine agitate the flooring to clean the surface.
  • The strong movement of the brushes strips the flooring, removing any stubborn residue.
  • If cleaning carpet, there is a solution tank to aid in ease of cleaning carpets.
  • When needed, they apply the solution, release the solution, and move the roto machine in circles to work it into the carpet.

Since there are different types of residue depending on the kind of smoke created by specific burning substances, various methods are employed to best clean and bring the home back to preloss status. In addition to cleaning your flooring, technicians use deodorization methods such as fogging to eliminate the evidence of a fire.

Can Water Intrusion or Flooding in Oceanside Lead to Microbial Growth?

5/14/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO drying equipment being used in water damaged room SERVPRO is available 24/7 to handle your water loss events.

Water Incidents in Oceanside can provide the Conditions for Uncontrolled Growth of Bacteria, Viruses, and Mold

Oceanside properties are at a high risk of water intrusion and should seek professional assistance to limit secondary harm.

What are the leading causes of water intrusion for beachfront properties?

Homeowners may frequently require professional water removal services here in Oceanside. Proximity to the sea can increase the chances of groundwater eruption, saltwater intrusion, and floods. Sometimes these situations are linked to weather conditions like heavy rainfall, which can raise the groundwater level. Groundwater levels can also heighten when water from the sea enters the bay, a phenomenon known as a saltwater intrusion.

How can I tell if my home is victim to groundwater intrusion?

Groundwater travels in aquifers beneath the ground. These aquifers can overflow, which causes water to rise through the soil and reach the surface level. When water tables reach a certain height, they can begin to affect your property, starting in the foundations, moving up through crawlspaces, and, eventually, moving up through floors on the ground level. Controlling this type of water intrusion can be challenging because systematic methods, such as blocking entranceways, is less effective. In many cases, drains are unable to transport water away from the street or property because they, too, are overflowing. We offer water restoration technicians to oceanside residents that require emergency draining of the property as well as the transportation and disposal of large amounts of groundwater.

What makes groundwater flooding different from other types of water intrusion?

  • Water rises from the ground, rather than from rainfall or a water source like a burst dam
  • Groundwater brings silts, debris, and muds into the home, so we classify it as a blackwater emergency
  • Crawlspaces, foundations and subterranean areas of the house are the most affected by groundwater flooding
  • It can be challenging to drain properties in areas where aquifers are overflowing as they can limit the effectiveness of sewer and plumbing systems
  • There can be significant water migration into cavities and subfloors which are tough to dry out due to restricted accessibility for equipment

What professional services should I look for to restore groundwater intrusion?

When waters in Oceanside rise from the ground, they can cause significant harm in the structural cavities of your property. Particular areas of concern can be the subfloor, which is usually constructed of wood or concrete and can be adversely affected by water exposure leading to mold, warping or cupping of frames and jointing. Our roster of technicians at SERVPRO includes applied structural drying technicians (ASD) who are experts at finding and removing moisture from hard to reach areas. ASD technicians have an essential skillset for dealing with water intrusion.

How do I dry out the cavities of my home after water intrusion?

Your home is full of cavities that ventilate, structure, and store materials like sheetrock. These areas of the house can suffer significantly with water intrusion, which can lead to mold growth, rotting, and structural harm. There are physical barriers to restoring cavities as well, like drywall. Our technicians can perform a controlled demolition to remove obstacles and gain access to structural cavities temporarily. We can then circulate warm air into these areas to dry them thoroughly and reduce the chances of mold growth.

How can I find out if there is water migration into cavities?

  • You can place moisture sensors onto the wall's surface, which measures the temperature and provides an accurate reading water levels behind the wall.
  • You can probe the subfloor of your home by using a moisture meter. You can also use moisture meters to assess the water content of materials
  • Boroscopes provide exact information on cavity conditions. However, they do require some invasive procedures. Drill small holes into the wall to feed the boroscope behind drywall.
  • Hire thermal imaging cameras to assess larger areas of the wall without having to remove drywall
  • Remove small sections of drywall or carpet pads to perform a visual inspection of the cavity. Removal of physical barriers can aid in the drying process

Can you drywall cavities without demolishing drywall or remove flooring?

Some equipment like injectidry systems is less invasive when drying wall cavities. SERVPRO technicians drill small holes beneath the baseboard of the home. They can then attach injector nozzles to the wall and circulate warm air into the cavity. Floors can benefit from placing drying mats onto the floor. This equipment covers a larger surface area and uses a centrifugal vacuum to draw moisture out of the subfloor without removing it.

Water intrusion in your property can cause water migration into wall cavities. Without proper restoration, these cavities can become hotbeds for microbial activity, commonly leading to mold growth. By enlisting ASD technicians, you can ensure that these hard to reach areas receive appropriate drying treatment and limit the secondary losses to your home.

For specialist cavity drying technicians, contact SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801.

Long Island is a fabulous place to live with the advantage of being close to NYC. Still, sometimes, due to the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, residents encounter flooding brought on by storms and high tides. After Hurricane Sandy in the fall of 2012, Long Island dealt with a massive cleanup. Having gone through it once, most residents understand the importance of a plan and professional assistance.

Why Does My Oceanside Home Smell So Bad After the Fire?

4/13/2020 (Permalink)

fire yellow tape--do not cross SERVPRO Enters as the Firemen Leave to Start the Cleanup and Recovery for a Home in Oceanside

Our SERVPRO Team Can Help to Clean and Deodorize Your Damaged Home After a Fire Loss.

It is often not hard to understand that when there is a fire, many compromising effects can damage your Oceanside home. While structural concerns remain one of your top priorities, other conditions can get addressed during the mitigation phase. Our SERVPRO team has extensive experience and the use of sophisticated tools and potent deodorization products to maximize our efficiency in the recovery of your property.

Many people do not consider odors to be the most pressing fire damage in Oceanside homes, but it can be more of a challenge than you might want to believe. Combustion and burning during a fire can often generate smoke and other odors that could be difficult to overcome without industrial-grade deodorization products and delivery systems. Even with our experienced restoration technicians, we have multiple tools and devices that cater to specific situations, parts of your home, and affected materials. Every burning material can generate its foul odor for our technicians to need to overcome when we arrive, including:

Wood
Plastics
Fibers
Chemicals
Drywall

What Should Happen Immediately to Reduce Odors?

There are steps that you can take right away to help reduce the severity of odors in your homes after a fire, but many of these are not solutions that the average homeowner can provide on their own. Instead, many people have trusted the experience and fast response of our SERVPRO team to help. By arriving quickly to your emergency, we can focus our efforts on specific tasks that can lessen the severity of harsh odors that we encounter when we get there. Some of these initial actions might include:

Debris Removal - By using shovels and other methods of discarding our mitigation technicians and in-house contractors can work to remove charred remnants of structural elements and compromised contents. This action can reduce the concentration of both harsh odors and soot threats.

Soot Surface Cleaning - Cleaning surfaces that could be affected by soot is also one of the ways that we could reduce potential harsh odors present in your home. Also, this action can help to provide a safer environment for responding personnel.

Controlled Demolition - Our in-house contractors can perform material removal based on structural damage attributed to the fire and migrating effects. Damaged structural elements can be a concentrated point for odors.

Ventilation - circulating air can help to reduce the immediate severity of odor concerns but might not do much to neutralize smoke scents lingering behind.

What Special Equipment Gets Used to Neutralize Odors?

Much of our success and the deodorization of a fire-damaged home gets attributed to the right tool getting used at the right time. When removing odors, our technicians must carefully decide which of our capable machines and devices is best suited for the current loss effects to maximize our productiveness. Some of our options include:

Thermal Foggers / Vaporizers
Hydroxyl Generators
Ozone Machines
Air Scrubbers with HEPA Filtration

The choice in what devices get used over other options is a determination of our project manager and crew chief scoping the work to get done in the property before mitigation begins. The choices can get narrowed based on the types of materials affected, the size of the damaged area, and if occupants from the house are still living inside.

Can Odors Go Away on Their Own?

After almost every loss incident from destructive floods to housefires, homeowners believe that some degree of damage will naturally correct itself. When it comes to odors, the production and the severity of harsh scents can mislead property owners to a belief that these effects are waning. In gaseous states, smoke odors can penetrate porous materials and become trapped when these pores shrink after temperatures return to normal after fires get extinguished.

Because odors do not go away on their own, our SERVPRO team needs to implement the right deodorization practices that affect both the open air and trapped odors in structural elements like wood framing, drywall, and ceiling materials. Powerful tools to accomplish trapped odor neutralization are the thermal foggers in our inventory. By heating deodorization compounds to a vapor, it can penetrate porous materials to eliminate odors on contact. Even when residual odors have been neutralized, as indicated by data-driven evidence, phantosmia can still mislead occupants into sensing that malodors remain.

While multiple damaging effects can result from housefires, often odors are among the least concerning of these for customers. In truth, this can be one of the most challenging hurdles to overcome in the recovery of your home. Give our SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside team call today at (516) 536-1801.

What is the Best Way to Deodorize After a Water Leak in Oceanside?

4/10/2020 (Permalink)

Technicians Perform Water Cleanup including Deodorization in Oceanside Homes

Dealing with water cleanup in your Oceanside home after a water leak may be daunting, but it is critical to deal with it right away; otherwise, you may face secondary damage such as warped flooring or dangerous mold infestations. Sometimes a pungent odor remains, indicating an underlying issue. The water restoration specialists at SERVPRO skillfully uncover the issue and then proceed to eliminate it.

Why is There an Odor After a Water Spill?
Several things that may cause a smell after a water leak in Oceanside. It could be that the water itself was contaminated and considered gray (category 2) or black water (category 3). There is also the possibility that you missed drying a wet surface, causing an odor as the water soaks into the material.

What Do Technicians do to Keep Odors from Developing?
    •    Remove water using portable and truck-mounted extraction equipment
    •    Make multiple passes to suck up as much water as possible
    •    Dry the affected area with air movers and dehumidifiers

How Do You Deal with the Smell After Cleanup?
    •    Find and remove the source
    •    Use masking agents such as time-release beads
    •    Use filtration and absorption agents like activated charcoal
    •    Use disinfectant and sanitizers to stop odor-causing bacteria and fungal growth

In cases where the odor is strong SERVPRO technicians may use an Ozone generator that uses ozone gas to mix with odor particles. The extra oxygen changes the chemical structure of the odor particles and reduces the scent. The best defense against odor after a spill is to extract and dry right away, however, when odors develop, our technicians use multiple techniques that address each specific situation.

Essential Skills that Help Resolve Commercial Mold Damage Cases in Affected Oceanside Hotels

3/20/2020 (Permalink)

mold growing on wall We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

We have the skills to assist your Oceanside hotels with mold damage

Mold development might not stop operations in your workplace immediately, as other incidents would. However, mold is associated with health problems and can even lead to lawsuits from employees or clients who patronize your establishment. A hotel with patches of mold on surfaces such as ceilings, walls, or under sinks might not indicate the most sanitary conditions, thus driving clients away. Taking steps to deal with commercial mold damage immediately you suspect or notice signs, is therefore essential.

Complete remediation of commercial mold damage cases affecting Oceanside hotels requires a combination of activities, which need a variety of skills. Our SERVPRO crews are made up of several technicians with different qualifications such as:

    •    Applied Structural Drying Technicians
    •    Applied Microbial Remediation Specialists
    •    Upholstery and Fabric Cleaning Technicians
    •    Odor Control Technicians

Dealing with mold in a hotel requires a proper understanding of the moisture sources that fuel growth. Apart from traditional sources such as leaks, moisture can originate from facilities such as pools, saunas, or gyms within the hotel. Isolating areas affected by mold from the rest of the facility is also an essential part of the restoration process. Our SERVPRO technicians can use moisture detection equipment such as thermohygrometers to check humidity levels in various sections of the hotel, thus identifying likely sources of moisture.

Removing mold colonies and debris is a crucial part of the restoration process. With several rooms and probably more than one floor, a hotel has several hidden areas where mold can develop unabated. Our SERVPRO crews perform controlled demolition to reach into such cavities. Before opening up the walls, we set up containment using plastic sheets and run a negative air machine during the actual demolition to prevent debris from spreading. We remove all porous materials heavily infested with mold and clean the rest to remove settled spores and other debris. Ventilating and dehumidifying the property helps finalize the remediation process.

Guests would not want to spend time in a moldy Westwood, Century City, or Westwood Village hotel. Call SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801 to restore your hotel to its preloss state. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Water Removal Service Helps Oceanside Resident Salvage Most Possessions

As anyone familiar with Oceanside knows, local winter temperatures can get quite frigid at times.  These freezing periods are not only uncomfortable; they often cause serious problems for homeowners like Patrick, a local office worker, who recently had to deal with the devastating effects of a ruptured water pipe.  One morning, without warning, he awoke to inches of standing water in his house.  Fortunately, a water removal service like SERVPRO can save his home and salvage most of his prized possessions.

Patrick’s first reaction to this morning nightmare was panic. Concerned that irreparable damage had already been done, he was unsure if an Oceanside water removal service could save any of his waterlogged belongings.  After he got his bearings, Patrick searched on his phone for a service that might be able to help.  This was when, for this narrative, he found SERVPRO and learned about their extensive experience in mitigating water damage and restoring affected items.  This homeowner soon found out there is a science to rapidly drying out materials and surrounding air.  It takes the right technical knowledge and specialized equipment to do the job right.

Shortly after contacted, SERVPRO can send their technicians to develop a drying plan for the affected parts of the Oceanside house.  They first established a drying goal, based on the moisture levels of unaffected rooms, which would return inundated or wet areas to their original dryness.  Progress toward this goal was monitored daily by measuring specific humidity and using moisture meters to check moisture contents.

SERVPRO started its drying project with extractors to remove as much standing water as possible since physical water extraction is over a thousand times more efficient than dehumidification.  Once they removed as much water as they could, company technicians brought in portable heaters to increase room temperatures to between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. This heating raised the moisture-carrying capacity of the air and facilitated increased evaporation.  Next, within twenty-four hours, workers used dehumidifiers to remove excess moisture from the air and reduce its relative humidity to below 40%.  Simultaneously, they strategically positioned air movers to draw in dry, warm air and blow out the damp.  All this sped up the drying process.

After the process ended, Patrick was pleased to find that most of his belongings had been saved.  If ever faced with a similar situation, you can contact SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536 – 1801.

Drying Out Structures after Removing the Water Mitigates the Losses for Oceanside Property Owners--So Call SERVPRO!

Water Cleanup in Oceanside in a Home Office Has Special Challenges

Working from your Oceanside home has its perks; however, water damage can halt a home-based virtual business just as much as a brick and mortar facility. Fortunately, SERVPRO handles any type of water loss.

A home office transcription worker, after a pipe burst in her Oceanside home, caused a large amount of water to affect the area where she worked. The water soaked the carpet, and she was concerned about her equipment and files.

Why SERVPRO?
When the technicians arrive on-site, they approach each job with compassion for what the property owner is experiencing. They find out what is essential to the homeowner in the loss area and make that element of the restoration services a priority for removal and cleaning first. It does not matter if an item has monetary or sentimental value; if it is essential to the property owner, it is important to the techs at SERVPRO.

Move Out Contents as Needed
The computer, transcription equipment, and locked filing cabinet needed removal during mitigation as the cabinet was fabricated from metal with the potential for rust, and the homeowner wanted to have her computer and equipment tested to ensure the high moisture conditions did not damage it before using it.

Water Removal and Equipment
When the water loss occurred less than 24 hours before, there is often a good chance that the carpet can dry in place, sometimes using a method called "floating." The techs spend time extracting the water using weighted wands to assist in pushing out the moisture from the padding and carpet. This attention to detail helps lessen the time needed to dry.

Drying the Office in Place
Techs put the desk and chair up on blocks for drying as they showed zero signs of water loss and made of materials that would fare well to dry in place. Once the room dried, the techs set the office back up for the homeowner, so she could get back to the business of transcribing for her clients.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801 helps property owners with any size water cleanup and makes the loss to the home "Like it never even happened."

Could You be Making This Mistake When Dealing with Commercial Fire Damage in Oceanside?

Textile Cleaning for Oceanside Clothing Stores with Commercial Fire Damage

A high street retail clothes store is full of potentially flammable materials. A short-fusing circuit can be all it takes to trigger a property emergency. Electrical fires are reasonably common among commercial clients because stores typically run power through lighting, air-conditioning, or technology both day and, frequently, at night as well. A shop fire can leave behind smoke or soot damage on both the interior and the exterior of the structure. The transference of cold and hot air that occurs when materials combust creates pressure, which can force a trail of smoke out of the building and onto the exterior walls.

Our team holds substantial experience in commercial fire damage restoration here in Oceanside. We believe that communication is vital throughout the service as well as working on-time and on-budget. SERVPRO crew chiefs have training from the Institute of inspection, cleaning, and restoration certifications (IICRC) in ultra-specific aspects of fire restoration. These may include fire and smoke damage restoration technicians (FRST) as well as odor control technicians (OCT.)

There may be large amounts of clothing from your store that catches fire and is therefore non-salvageable. SERVPRO technicians can collect any debris from a fire site, seal it up and transport it to an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registered waste facility. While clothes close to the fire may be materially damaged, many other fabrics or items of clothing sustain smoke, soot, and odor damage, which is often restorable. SERVPRO technicians can inventory clothing before sending them to our textile cleaning warehouse.

Textiles are porous by nature and can, therefore, take on massive amounts of soot or smoke damages during a fire. However, by using mechanical cleaning methods, SERVPRO can restore up to 99% of soils. Esporta washings work by suspending a fabric in place while powerful rotary jet washers clean it with water pressure, water-based solvents as well as deodorants. We often find that mechanical cleaning methods can be far more valuable to our clients than a single replacement payout.

If your clothing outlet suffers from an electrical fire, contact SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801.

What Items Commonly Get Disposed of After Fire Damage in Oceanside Homes?

2/16/2020 (Permalink)

A table in a kitchen with fire damage and soot all over the kitchen. SERVPRO will help you through every decision after your Oceanside fire damage.

Your Oceanside home will need more than a clean up after fire damage.

When a house fire occurs, even on a small scale, the potential for fire damage and long term effects on the structure and contents remains. One of the most painful decisions is deciding what items must go.

SERVPRO technicians clean up fire damage in Oceanside homes and know how to assess restoration potential. Although the goal is to save property owners from the cost of replacement, charred and soot-covered items often require disposal. When going through debris post-fire, SERVPRO technicians only dispose of things too damaged for restoration by cleaning with the approval of the adjuster or homeowner.

Items that Frequently are a Loss

Smoke damage and soot are an irritant to many people and can cause redness or itching on contact. It is almost impossible to clean and disinfect clothing, bedding, and other textiles for safe reuse in the home. Cosmetics and medications have the potential to change chemically after a fire and could be affected by contaminants and chemicals used to extinguish the fire. Drugs, in particular, can lose their potency and should be tossed.

Food items exposed to soot in particular need disposal after a fire loss. Because soot particles can exist smaller than the human eye can see, they travel easily along screwtops of sealed foodstuffs contaminating them. The high heat can also cause the development of bacteria inside sealed food containers.

Items that May Be Restorable

When SERVPRO techs mitigate fire loss, they look for things with restorability potential. Immersion cleaning works best on non-porous objects that can tolerate saturation in a liquid cleaning agent. This method thoroughly removes soot and smoke residues. Hardwood furniture without charring is not necessarily a loss. The techs have various cleaners to lift away the smoke damage from the wood. If necessary, the application of a sealant and restaining may get recommended to restore the furnishing fully. The techs wipe down surfaces using specifically chosen cleaning agents to ensure all traces of the fire get cleaned up.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801 has certified technicians and equipment to handle any size fire damage and make the loss "Like it never even happened."

Commercial Water Cleanup In Oceanside Can Involve Cleaning Spots and Stains

One day you could arrive to work at your office in Oceanside and notice that there is an excessive amount of H20 on your carpets. The first step to commercial water cleanup is to extract as much moisture as possible while it is still in liquid form. Next, any professional restoration company such as SERVPRO can set up drying equipment to remove moisture from your wet contents and building materials.

The last step to any commercial water cleanup project in Oceanside is to conduct a final cleaning of the negatively affected areas in your office. Whenever carpets get wet, it is likely that staining will occur. Sometimes the staining gets created by the H20 itself if it is dirty. Other times moisture can cause your carpets to stain with things like rust, or it can move soils from other areas onto your carpet.

Whenever we work towards cleaning stained carpets inside your office, our SERVPRO technicians clean the spots on your flooring before cleaning all of the carpets. We clean spots first because sometimes the cleaning process will discolor the cleaned areas and the regions of the carpet that were stained will look different than the rest of the carpet. General cleaning of all of the carpets, along with a rinse, usually removes this type of discoloration.

When cleaning stains and spots, the first step is to remove any excess soils. Sometimes the stains can be removed completely by acting fast and removing the soils by scraping, blotting, or vacuuming. To start, we use a mild detergent called carpet and upholstery cleaner and plain H2O to remove water-based soils. If there are oil-based soils present, then we can utilize a volatile dry solvent such as Solvent Spotter.

If all of the staining does not come out during the first attempt at cleaning the spot, then we next determine the type of soil that is causing the stain. Next, we figure out the type of fabric that makes up your carpet. Once we know the type of materials we are working with, and we determine what kind of soil is causing the staining, we can then figure out the best method to clean the stain. Most stains get removed by treating the soiled spot with a chemical agent and agitating it with a scrubber before the carpets get steam cleaned.

If you ever arrive at work and step into a puddle inside your office, it is wise to call SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801 24/7. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Oceanside Restoration Professionals Talk About the Importance of Using Air Movement to Drying Water Damage

Air Movement Affects Drying in Damaged Oceanside Condos

Drying any damaged property after a water loss incident can be a challenge, and when our professionals work on your Oceanside condo, we face several obstacles before finding success. One of the most significant hurdles that our water restorers must face is how different one water loss scenario is from another. While specific principles govern all drying, such as airflow, time, and temperature, the affected materials, and areas of the property demand a different balance of these conditions.

In your condo, many of the construction materials are higher quality, making water damage in Oceanside condos more manageable when a fast response occurs. Hardwood cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms, for example, are more water-resistant and often cheaper to restore on-site than the cost of removal and replacement. Regulating airflow can be a significant component of the successful recovery of these premium construction materials and structural elements.

The layout of the condo, including the placement of windows and doors that can open dictate how air movement must either enter or exit the damaged areas. We must also determine if unplanned openings like cracks or gaps (some of which that might have recently formed with the newly developing water loss) exist. Controlling and directing airflow can maximize drying, while mismanagement can lead to costlier material replacement and restoration.

Our SERVPRO water restoration professionals have trained through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) that shows the greater a technician’s understanding of ingress, egress, and movement through a damaged property, the faster structures can get recovered. Our team must determine the presence of air coming into the environment, or infiltration, and where we can allow it to exit the premises to reduce humid conditions in the drying space.

Controlling the airflow in a building can reduce the migration of water from your condo to a neighboring unit, and can also protect the exposed structural elements that must get dried to restore your property. Our SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside team can help to make water losses “Like it never even happened,” when you call (516) 536-1801.

How to Restore Hardwood Flooring in Your Flood Damaged Oceanside Home

Global sea levels are rising because of melting glaciers, warming oceans, and ice sheets. This has increased the risk of flooding in areas close to beaches. Flooding is an issue in the low lying areas of Oceanside, NY, and it can lead to property damage and loss of valuable belongings.

Cleaning up your Oceanside home after flood damage is vital for your health and preventing secondary destruction. Floodwater can contain raw sewage, silt, and chemicals. Saturated building materials like drywall also become heavy and unstable and may collapse at any time. Rodents, snakes and stinging insects can also occupy your flooded home and pose dangers. It is vital to use proper flood cleanup methods to deal with this kind of disaster.

Our SERVPRO flood restoration experts can help you with removing the floodwater, cleaning, drying and sanitizing your home to restore it to its original state. Our restorers typically wear personal protective equipment like gloves, rubber boots, face masks, and goggles in the initial stages of the flood cleanup job.

Our crew can inspect your home to determine the magnitude of the flood damage. If your home has hardwood flooring, it might not be salvageable if it was totally submerged in floodwater for several days. However, in less severe scenarios, it may be possible to restore the floor successfully. If only a few boards have swelled against each other, cupped, warped and buckled, we can replace or sand them individually to restore a smooth, flat surface. To increase the chances of restoring hardwood flooring, some of the things we can do include:

Removing the water quickly using powerful pumps or wet/dry vacuums.
Thoroughly cleaning and using antimicrobial products to sanitize the wood floors before air drying to prevent mold infestation.
Running industrial dehumidifiers around the clock to minimize moisture content. We can also use high-volume air movers to circulate air in your home continuously to speed up drying.
Taking moisture content readings of the hardwood at regular intervals to determine when the optimal moisture percentage is achieved.

Our SERVPRO team can also monitor the subfloor when drying the hardwood flooring. Sometimes, hardwood floors dry, but the subflooring underneath them is wet. We can use penetrating moisture meters with long Teflon-coated probes to check if all the layers of the floor are dry.

After floodwater has entered your Long Beach, Atlantic Beach or Lido Beach home, SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside can help with the flood cleanup process. Contact us at (516) 536-1801 any time, any day for quick restoration services.

One of the steps in the overall organization of fire recovery is determining the scope. In plain words, the scope of a project is the work that must get performed. This determination includes all activities necessary to return home to a preloss condition.

The scope of a project begins with the determination of how severe fire damage in Long Beach properties is. The inspection of the house starts with the source of the disaster and works outward from room to room. During this assessment, our trained SERVPRO technicians can take stock of materials and items present in each area and which have already succumbed to the spreading fire effects. Noting current conditions can help our specialists to determine the necessary materials and personnel.

Our scoping process is also vital to determining the coverage that your insurance offers the fire-damaged residence. This accuracy can help us to make fire losses “Like it never even happened” despite catastrophic structural damages. Dealing with Water Damage from an Overloaded Dishwasher in Long Beach Over the Holidays

Preparing dinner parties and lavish gatherings mean your Long Beach home's kitchen gets very busy during the winter holidays. All of these dirty dishes, pots, pans, and utensils need pre-rinsing before going into the dishwasher to prevent clogs. Using hot water can help melt any semi-solids beforehand. When you start cleaning up after guests leave, being tired might tempt you to only partly rinse plates and dishes, which can lead to clogs in the drain.

A clog in the dishwasher's drain line can leave your home in Long Beach primed for water damage. The hot water used to clean things up can speed up any damage, as well, dissolving any glues or backings holding your flooring together. Water at such high temperatures can also discolor carpets or wood floors, either by bleaching the area or by leaving water rings. Saturating your floor's underlay materials might cause warping, buckling, and weak spots. SERVPRO technicians know how to mitigate the damage, so these problems subside in scope, reducing the amount of restoration your property needs.

We want to get the water cleaned up to reduce the amount of drying time required. Because of the detergent used in the dishwasher, we rely on our building team to provide this step in the mitigation process. They bring in carpet cleaning equipment that can handle the mess and provide adequate suction to the area. Cleaning the rest of the kitchen floor, when carpeted, can cancel out any water rings, as well.

The looseness of wooden plank flooring lets a great deal of water to soak the underside of these boards. This is the primary cause of cupping. We might need to remove a few of these boards so our InjectiDry system can more efficiently withdraw the moisture trapped underneath. Infrared cameras can show us the extent of the water under the floorboards, allowing us to use only the number of mats necessary.

Our moisture meters help determine the progress we make throughout the job. Too fast and wet wood might split. Too slowly, and we run the risk of letting microbes flourish. Different materials also require different percentages of moisture, and each needs to reach a specific range again to prevent the migration of water vapor within your home.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside is always ready and nearby when residents in Atlantic Beach, Lido beach, or Point Lookout want mitigation and restoration of water damage. We handle all sizes of disasters, from dishwasher overflows to week-long broken pipes discovered after coming home from vacation. Call (516) 536-1801 to make your house “Like it never even happened.”

What it Takes to Turn Around Kitchen Fire Damage in Long Beach

12/8/2019 (Permalink)

Two kids with ash on their faces, holding a burnt cake. Let SERVPRO be your fast moving fire recovery team. So we can get your loved ones back to cooking in your Long Beach kitchen.

Long Beach homeowners, SERVPRO will turn your Kitchen fire damage around.

Kitchen fires are one of the most common causes of fire damage in homes. A careless moment leaving an unattended pan on a stove or a roast in a too-hot oven burning are standard reasons. Another frequently seen source of this type of fire is frozen items such as a turkey placed in hot oil. The ice turns to steam immediately and fires up the blaze, which can spread quickly.

Fire damage to a Long Beach kitchen leaves behind several challenges for SERVPRO technicians. In the case of a forgotten pan of grease, the fast-moving fire left smoke damage and charred debris to clean up along with much-needed odor control.

Why SERVPRO

The technicians approach every job-site with equal parts, professionalism, and compassion for the loss the homeowners have suffered. They work to restore as much as possible through their cleaning agents and techniques to help homeowners avoid the replacement costs for items damaged in the fire.

First Actions After Fire Loss

To limit the spread of soot to other areas of the home, technicians can put up barriers to stop the spread of odorous residue. They remove charred items such as the stove and exhaust hood and other things too damaged for restoration. Any items removed as a loss get documented for photos and detailed descriptions to expedite insurance claims.

Professional Cleaning Agents and Techniques

Not all smoke residues are the same and require various types of techniques for a successful outcome. Thick, greasy residues often need a cleaner with a solvent base to release their grip on surfaces while dry, powdery smoke residues require a light hand and the use of cleaning tools such as dry cleaning sponges. Using wet agents has the potential to drive this type of residue deeper into surfaces.

Professional Odor Control Methods

It is impossible to burn candles or spray enough odor-covering products over the residual odors of a kitchen fire. SERVPRO technicians have different applications to neutralize odors at the molecular level leaving the kitchen without a hint of the smoke odor.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside is available 24/7 at (516) 536-1801. The technicians have extensive training and access to equipment to make the fire loss in the home, "Like it never even happened."

Flood Extraction Equipment to the Rescue at Your Oceanside Home

In just a matter of hours, flooding from severe storms or a substantial plumbing or appliance disaster can overtake your Oceanside home. Water damage demands a speedy solution. Conventional building materials like drywall and insulation absorb liquids fast, swelling and crumbling. Other materials like tile or cinder block can withstand a short immersion, but the likelihood of water migration through cracks or unsealed grout or mortar joints is high. Even a trace of moisture unaddressed can set the stage for mold damage.

Welcome the Calvary

When our team pulls up at your home in Oceanside, flood extraction is the priority. Although no two jobs present precisely the same way, we prepare for all contingencies, stocking our service vehicles with top of the line flood water removal equipment. The category and depth of the water inform the choice our technicians make on the initial intervention. We avoid delays in response because of our comprehensive inventory.

Submersible Pumps

Best water removal industry practice dictates the use of submersible pumps when water is deeper than two inches. Our technicians ensure that the pumps selected have adequate lift capability and volume capacity. When pumps are operating, the wastewater should go directly into a treated sewer, typically a toilet. SERVPRO crews vary from this practice only when a septic system is involved or if the flood fluids contain solid debris which could clog the equipment. If mud or sewer backups contaminate the flood water with solids, the team uses shovels and rakes to remove them, checking on local hazardous waste rules for disposal. Septic system complications might require a subcontract with a septic tank company.

Truck Mounted and Portable Extractors

As the water recedes, SERVPRO breaks out wanded extractors suited to the circumstances. Where the flood damaged waters are in confined spaces or higher stories of a multi-family dwelling, portable extractors are invaluable for accessing the fluids. When we face large quantities of water, truck mounted extractors have the necessary power and capacity to manage the task. The extractors do double duty when carpeting and upholstery show flood damage. If we feel confident these items can be sanitized, wanded extractors pull water out, both mitigating or halting the spread and remediating the harm.

When your emergency involves flood water extraction, SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside has the equipment to answer the challenge on board. Call us at (516) 536-1801 to schedule rapid flood water control and removal.

Addressing Commercial Water Damage in a Long Beach Restaurant

In the US alone, water damage is the second most common category of commercial insurance claim filed. Whether the source is a loose seal, faulty roofing, or a cracked pipe, water damage to your facilities can be costly to repair without proper mitigation. For restaurants, this can pose additional challenges. If a leak affects your food storage, for example, this can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars to replace supplies after cleaning out your inventory space.

If you have an eatery that has suffered water damage in Long Beach, you have options. An IICRC-certified SERVPRO firm can send technicians to your business within hours of your call to return your facilities to a preloss condition. These professionals specialize in everything from disinfecting with OSHA-approved cleaners to odor control, so you can get a deep clean that is done to code.

Protecting Your Assets from Water Damage

Here are some tips for protecting your inventory from water damage:

  • Draw up a comprehensive inventory and take note of items in potentially risky areas.
  • Keep vulnerable items at least two to three feet above the floor and away from sinks, pipes, dishwashers, and other water sources.
  • Keep a backup storage plan for emergencies. Partner with a sister restaurant if possible so you can store perishables and other goods in a safe refrigerated space.
  • Fill staff members in on the plan, so they know what is expected of them when water damage occurs. Roles can include protecting food items during the shift or moving supplies to an emergency storage location.
  • Keep a list of emergency procedures and contacts. If you are not on-site when a disaster occurs, make sure team members know whom to contact to repair damages.

How SERVPRO Restores Your Business

SERVPRO technicians act quickly to remove water from your facilities so you can go back to business as usual. While water extraction is crucial to successful drying, disinfection with safe cleaning products is another important step in safeguarding your business. Technicians can use EPA-registered, pH-neutral cleaners on hard flooring surfaces as well as walls to sanitize your space without harmful chemicals and dyes.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside supports local businesses by being Faster to Any Size Disaster. If your business required disaster cleanup any time of the day or night, call (516) 536-1801.

A Primer on Air Movers and How They Dry Water Damage in Oceanside

11/6/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO drying equipment on water damaged floor When water damage happens, you need more than towels to dry your home. SERVPRO is equipped and always on call for your restoration needs;

Why Air Movers Are a Standard in Oceanside Water Recovery

Though there are hundreds of tools and devices available to our professionals to make a recovery as efficient and cost-effective as possible for Oceanside residences, specific machines and equipment get used more than others. In the realm of water loss recovery and drying, air movers are the standard choice for multiple reasons.

A better understanding of how air movers work and what they can do for your home can help to appreciate their role in restoring water damage in Oceanside properties. Moving air, in general, is a positive solution for aiding in the faster drying of your property after water losses. Tools in this niche of restoration are designed to move a boundary of humid air from directly in front of or above naturally drying construction materials and contents. Without removing this barrier of cooler air, evaporation of the moisture in these materials can slow.

This step is one of the primary purposes of multiple positioned air movers throughout a water-damaged residence. Each unit pushes moisture and moves this cool, moisture-laden barrier hovering above affected surfaces away to quicken drying procedures. Because our SERVPRO team has hundreds of these high-velocity devices at our disposal, we can position them in many points throughout a damaged address to make moisture removal more efficient. Daisy-chaining, or plugging one unit into the next in the line, can reduce a need for multiple extension cords and helps to maximize airflow in an affected region of the house.

When dehumidifiers like our desiccants begin removing moisture from the damaged regions of your home, an exhaust hose reintroduces heated, drier air into the household. Air movers can also get used in these scenarios to help better disperse the incoming new air. A more consistent dispersal of drier air can also play a role in reducing the time drying takes.

Drying your home is primarily linked to the tools and equipment used by the professionals that you trust. Our SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside team counts on our high-velocity air mover and dehumidifiers to help. Contact us anytime at (516) 536-1801.

The Smart Thing to Do When Fire Damage Strikes in your Long Beach Home

10/25/2019 (Permalink)

water damage in the living room of a home Make your living situation right again after flood damage happens, call SERVPRO.

Why SERVPRO Technicians Test Your Home's Walls for Signs of Water Damage in Long Beach NY

Homes in Long Beach NY that contain higher than usual amounts of humidity generally develop more damage in the forms of microbial infestation, stained walls and ceilings, warped wooden components (especially wooden flooring and the treads on stairs), and an uncomfortable dampness.

Often, the source of increased water vapor is unknown, which is why SERVPRO technicians inspecting homes in Long Beach NY for water damage use devices to find the source. These devices use infrared technology to reveal changes in the temperature of surfaces. Water, even slight amounts, can cause a cooling effect in drywall, plaster, wood paneling, and carpet. Following the images on our infrared camera can lead us to its source.

Quite often, we find slow leaks, drips from the elbow joint or other connection in the plumbing, or loosened feed lines on appliances to cause the problem. However, sometimes water from an accident in the bathroom or kitchen caused the original problem when the floor became soaked. This type of situation does not show up on our cameras like more recent or ongoing situations do. SERVPRO can still repair the damage left behind, and make your property just like it was before.

When we search your house's interior for water or moisture, we test the exterior walls, too. Outside sources from rain or snow can cause dampness in your home. Ice dams on the roof can create openings where melted water leaks into the attic, spreads through your insulation, and then soaks into the ceilings below. Water from the roof can also travel down through the hollow interiors of your walls. Our infrared cameras easily locate these leaks.

Whenever we find that the roof needs repairs, our building services department helps out by making the needing repairs. Water damage can affect almost every part of your house, and when it does, mitigating the damage and repairing the cause gets your home back to preloss condition.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside has water damage specialists skilled in detection and restoration of damaged areas in homes throughout Atlantic Beach, Lido Beach, and Point Lookout. Contact us by calling (516) 536-1801, day or night, 365 days a year.

Independent Oceanside Retailers can rely on SERVPRO for Commercial Water Damage Restoration

Independent retailers in Oceanside rely on the bustling tourist trade to survive throughout the year. However, the rainy season can often bring storms and flash flooding to the area causing unfortunate damage to the district's commercial businesses. Prolonged exposure to moisture can damage stock like clothing or beachwear and even high ticket items like surfboards, wetsuits, or snorkeling equipment. Stored items can warp, become infested by mold, or suffer other secondary damages if water reaches the stockroom.

Often, a commercial water damage issue in Oceanside can occur after an initial flood or rainwater problem has been cleared away. Water migrates from wet to dry and can seep between floorboards or into the wall cavities of your retail store. Over time, these issues can become increasingly severe, causing unpleasant wet odors as well as bacterial damages on both the businesses structure and its stock supplies. We offer a premium service for thoroughly cleaning and drying your structure and contents to ensure you do not lose valuable stock.

SERVPRO commercial teams are stationed locally in Oceanside and the surrounding area. We offer quick to call out times as well as expertise in the proper drying of a structure from start to finish. Applying chemical agents like biocides, sanitizers, and disinfectants during the restoration procedure can be a vital barrier against long-term issues. SERVPRO technicians begin by using detection equipment to find all areas of concern in the property to ensure our process is thorough.

On arrival, SERVPRO can begin removal work by taking stock away from the affected area and storing it in a designated cleanroom or off-site. Our technicians are capable of speeding up evaporation times using a combination of dehumidification and air-moving equipment.Throughout the procedure, our technicians can measure the effectiveness and outcomes of the work being done to ensure your commercial property is given the care it needs. Structural cavity drying equipment can be brought onside while inspections of your heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) are carried out as standard. Stock can be dried- and where necessary mechanically cleaned- before being returned to the store, "Like it never even happened."

Keep service closure to a minimum by bringing in professional restorers for business damages, contact SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801 for help.

Our Certified Professionals Are Ready 24/7 To Restore Your Oceanside Home

Oceanside Flood Damage Leaves Mud and Odors in Home

Flash floods cause homeowners to suddenly find themselves wondering what to do with the sudden water intrusion and flood damage in their homes.

One of the worst types of flood damage that can hit an Oceanside home is groundwater that brings in sludge and debris. Imagine even a quarter of an inch of wet mud in your home, and you can understand how hopeless that situation can look to a property owner. On top of that, groundwater is a class three biohazard and has the potential to contain everything from harmful bacteria to sewage.

Flood Water and Sludge Removal Process

When SERVPRO technicians handle flood damage debris removal, they use hand tools such as shovels and equipment like a trash pump to drain away sludge and silt. They repeat extraction until no further debris is left. Technicians then do several passes to remove the remaining moisture and prep the structure for drying.

Cleaning Contents Affected by Flood Water

Porous items receive the most damage in a flood loss situation. When they absorb the water, they also take on whatever is in the water resulting in low potential for restoration. Upholstered furnishings and area rugs saturated with groundwater generally are not candidates for disinfection and reuse.

Items that have little potential for absorption of groundwater generally respond well to different types of cleaning. Immersion cleaning is the most reliable way to clean things that have come into contact with floodwater. Technicians dip the items in a cleaning solution bath to remove bacteria, sludge, and water spots.

Removing Water Odors

After the water cleanup, any needed controlled demolition for damaged building materials and structural drying, SERVPRO technicians address any needed odor control. Flood damage leaves behind strong odors and technicians have a diverse array of applications to choose from depending on the amount of scent treatment necessary.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801 is available to clean up and restore homes with flood damage 24/7. As local residents, they care about the community and arrive quickly on-site because We're Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Flood Damage Experts From Oceanside Teach Us About Scientific Methods.

9/26/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO equipment in a room with wallpaper, and a wood beamed ceiling. We take pride in using our teachings to assist our Oceanside community.

Let our SERVPRO technicians break down our methods for your Oceanside flood damage.

If a storm strikes your Oceanside neighborhood, the wind can cause something to fly into your structure and break a hole that can allow rainwater to enter. Once moisture gets to the interior of a structure, flood damage can quickly take place. The best idea once you notice water inside your home is to call in a professional restoration company such as SERVPRO for assistance. Our highly trained team provides fast 24/7 service.

When mitigating flood damage in Oceanside, our SERVPRO technicians utilize their knowledge of how moisture can affect a building. One science our team studies is psychrometry. Psychrometrics or psychrometry is defined as the study of air and its properties. By knowing how air and moisture interact with each other, we can figure out how to remove moisture in the fastest way possible.

Two main things that affect how fast the natural evaporation and drying process occurs are the humidity and temperature of the air inside your house. Wet items dry slower in environments that have high humidity levels. On the other hand, low humidity levels can help make the drying process go quicker. Temperature makes a difference because warm air can hold more water vapor than cooler air because it contains more energy.

These principles are why we monitor relative humidity levels while drying out a structure. The relative humidity is defined as the amount of moisture the air is currently holding at a given temperature. The amount is shown as a percentage of the maximum amount of water vapor air can hold when saturated at the same temperature.

Sometimes we calculate the humidity ratio, which is the actual amount of water in the air. Humidity ratios are measured by how many grains of moisture there is for every pound of air. The humidity ratio tells us how many grains per pound the air can hold at any given temperature. Whereas, relative humidity describes how much water is present compared to its capacity.

Flooding situations can be stressful, but you are in luck because our team of experts is just a phone call away and We're Faster To Any Size Disaster. When in need of restoration services, call SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801 any time of the day.

We Act Fast To Limit More Damage To Your Long Beach Home After A Flood

How Professionals Can Help You Deal With Flood Damage in Long Beach

A flooding disaster can strike your home at any time, and the damage associated with it can be expensive to fix. Standing water is hazardous because of the many electrical components which exist within the walls of your house. Enough water poses the risk of electrocution and short-circuiting your electrical system. It is, therefore, necessary to cut off power from your home.

Floodwater can also ruin drywall, and cause mold growth and warping of the wood. You can prevent further flood damage to your Long Beach home by extracting the water and drying the building within a short time. If water lingers on the floor for a long time, it can ruin it. For instance, if your house has tile flooring, the floodwater can damage the adhesive on the tiles. It is vital to hire SERVPRO technicians to begin the restoration process.

Our priority is removing any debris a flood has left and clearing the wreckage. We also assess the damage, which could include destruction to roofing, windows, plumbing, and electrical systems. We also check for structural instability like leaning of walls, separation from the foundation, and diagonal cracks that could be a sign of a settling problem. Another issue with flooding is that there could be pests like rats and snakes hiding in the debris or unexpected places in your house.

We take photos to document the destruction. With this information, our technicians can come up with a plan to restore your home to its normal state. We categorize water damage into three levels of severity: extreme, substantial, and minor. Beginning the restoration process quickly can help you keep the flood damage to a minimum and subsequently save you money.

Our flood damage cleanup process is calculated and thorough. We remove standing water using pumps or wet/dry vacuum cleaners. Floodwater is usually contaminated because it may contain sewage, pesticides, and toxic chemicals. Our technicians wear different personal protective equipment (PPE) to stay safe when cleaning up a flooded building. They include:

· Full bodysuits

· Rubber loves

· Goggles

· Rubber boots

After removing the water, our technicians dry the affected areas using air moving and dehumidifying equipment. Dry air is vital for drying damp materials. Dehumidification or ventilation helps reduce humidity in a building, and this speeds up drying. We also use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to check if there is hidden moisture in a home. If moisture is present, we take steps to dry the areas thoroughly. Our SERVPRO crew also uses antimicrobial products to sanitize a home to make it safe to live in again.

Flooding is something that every homeowner dreads. However, if such an incident occurs, you can call SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside to help you clean up your home. You can reach us any time at (516) 536-1801.

Why SERVPRO Expedites Water Removal in Your Long Beach Home

8/31/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO equipment in a room that has water on the floor. Water can damage your Long Beach home fast, don’t wait we want to help.

We want to help with water damage in our Long Beach communities.

Water loss situations involving clean water may not seem very urgent since there is no contamination risk or other inconveniences such as bad odor. However, that should not be an excuse to let the water sit in your property over extended periods. You might not realize it, but given time, microbial growth happens even in situations involving clean water. Choosing an option that expedites the water removal process is, therefore, essential.

To Prevent Material Deterioration

Water causes different types of material degradation, which expedited water removal in your Long Beach home can help prevent. For example, soaked drywall discolors, wood swells, while carpets stain easily. These problems can progress to advanced irreversible levels if left unaddressed. Our SERVPRO crews include IICRC certified water restoration technicians, so we know the best ways to remove the water before these problems progress. For example, since extracting water in liquid form is 1200 times more effective than evaporation based extraction, we maximize extraction efforts before starting drying.

To Allow You Full Access to Your Home Faster

Spilled water creates different inconveniences, including leaving contents or building materials wet. Such inconveniences can force you to look for accommodation elsewhere or at least limit access to some rooms within the house. Fast action, primarily relying on advanced equipment, helps restore normalcy faster. Our SERVPRO technicians use truck-mounted and portable water extractors allowing us to deal with several sections of the property conveniently.

 To Prevent Mold Development

Mold growth is a common outcome of water loss incidents. Growth can start within periods as short as 24-48 hours after a spill. Mold spores are omnipresent, requiring moisture and an organic food source to start developing. It, therefore, takes more than just extracting standing water to forestall growth. Our SERVPRO technicians use several units of LGR dehumidifiers and air movers strategically placed within your house to expedite drying.

Simple water loss situations can worsen if left unaddressed over an extended period. Call SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside at (516) 536-1801 to help with the removal. With our combined resources, we can resolve the incident, "Like it never even happened."

Quick Tips For Assessing Mold Damage In Your Oceanside Office

Mold growth is nothing out of the ordinary for many businesses throughout Oceanside, mainly on account of elevated humidity levels and moisture content. Even with a sealed office building, moisture levels within the structure can rise to a compromising point, leaving the structure vulnerable to microbial growth. Knowing when a problem exists with certainty, however, might not always be as straightforward as it seems.

As Applied Microbial Remediation Technicians accredited through the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), we want our customers and potential clients to understand the severity of mold damage in Oceanside businesses. With our extensive training and years of hands-on experience, we have an entire division of our restoration team qualified to identify mold growth and to eliminate colonization when it gets discovered. If you do not want to rely on the confident, thorough inspection of our SERVPRO professionals, however, there are ways that you can find microbial growth without sophisticated equipment.

Visual Assessment
A trusted way to identify the presence of mold in your office building is to take the time to inspect the entire property thoroughly. This assessment should especially take place in any subterranean storage areas, which could require moving old desks or equipment endlessly stored beneath the main level of the facility. You are looking for spotting, usually, which appears as irregular dots in a range of colors on hosting materials. Just because you cannot see colonization, does not mean it is not there.

Foreign Odors
You can often notice mold colonization long before you see it. Seating mold spores emit a distinctive musty scent, and this noxious smell can quickly illustrate your need for our SERVPRO remediation team. Be mindful of vacating the area where you suspect mold growth to be, as your presence in the area could lead to health effects from exposure to volatile organic compounds. Our professionals can address the growing colony once we arrive and utilize sophisticated equipment to address this lingering odor.

Mold growth is an underappreciated threat to your facility, especially with how quickly it can spread from one area to another. With a facility primary constructed of wood and drywall, your office building can rapidly fall under siege to the invasive and destructive organism. Give our SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside remediation specialists a call anytime that you need us at (516) 536-1801 so that we can keep your doors open if possible.

We Make Your Oceanside Home Safe Again After A Fire

8/7/2019 (Permalink)

We have the equipment and expertise to restore your home right away to prevent further damage to your home.

Fire Damage in Your Attic Space Lets Smoke into the Rest of Your Oceanside Residence

Your Oceanside home's ventilation system can send smoke downward and into your family's living space when a fire starts in the attic. Your HVAC system can pick up smoke through air intake vents, or even be the cause of the fire. While filters catch a substantial amount, smoke can still pass through your system and into each room of your house. Tiny openings around your attic's entrance can also let smoke escape.

While the smell of smoke alerts you, so your family escapes safely from your residence in Oceanside, fire damage continues to spread and worsen. The harm to your living space can become as costly to mitigate as the fire damage in the attic. We want to assure you that our specialists know the most efficient methods to mitigate smoke damage and repair the destruction caused directly to your attic.

Smoke travels through the path of least resistance, so doorways and windows often become bearers of the marks of fire. Corners of rooms also hold a denser coating of soot because of the way it can become trapped in this area. Wherever we find soot, ash, and liquid by-products, we use the method best suited for both the affected materials and the type of soiling.

Soot not only transfers easily from one surface to another, on clothing, hands, and objects, it also puts off a terrible odor. In addition to these two problems, soot also easily damages glossy surfaces when its sharp but microscopic particles etch fine lines into surfaces. To remove soot and fire damage from items in your home that could become permanently ruined, we perform an initial cleaning to prevent this from occurring.

Our building services team can perform an HVAC inspection for you if desired, as this can save you time and money. Other services these specialists perform include electrical work and roofing repair. Attic fires can weaken the roof on the interior side, even when damage remains undetectable on the outside. A bit of snowfall in the winter can spell disaster in such situations.

While you might not find any soot as you did immediately after the fire, odors can linger because the fire's heat pushes smoke in the smallest spaces. As soon as the smoke in these locations cools, the solids fall to the next horizontal surface and remain there, slowly disintegrating.

As these pieces get smaller, even weak air currents can pull these back into the air. This is where odors start. To counteract this, we use a method that mimics the smoke. Thermal fogging uses chemicals that form bonds with foreign matter, keeping it from disintegrating. Afterward, the particles become too heavy to make it back into the air.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside has teams of specialists ready for disasters involving fire and smoke. Call us at (516) 536-1801, so we can start working on making your Atlantic or Lido Beach home safe, clean, and odor-free again, “Like it never even happened.”

Professional Tips for Removing Water from Long Beach Residences

7/24/2019 (Permalink)

You can DIY small water damage, but for large water damage events, you can trust the SERVPRO Brand.

A Guide to Performing Water Removal in Your Long Beach Residence

Water in unwanted places can ruin your pricey possessions and building materials in your house. If you remove the water quickly, you can minimize the damage and salvage your belongings. Depending on how long the water has settled in the home, you might save the furniture and carpets. However, if electronics have come into contact with water, they may malfunction.

Performing water removal in your Long Beach residence immediately after a water loss incident can also prevent mold growth. Mold not only can cause health problems but also ruin the floors, draperies, walls, and carpets. To prevent further destruction to your home and possessions, you should unplug electronics and remove them from the affected areas. Also, remove other portable items like furniture to increase the chances of saving them.

You should also take steps to extract the water such as using buckets, mops, and old towels to soak it up and then pour it down the drain. You can also use a wet/dry vacuum to extract the water and dry out the affected areas using fans and a dehumidifier, which you can rent. After drying and dehumidifying your property, you should sanitize and disinfect different areas, including drywall, insulation, and wood beams.

It is also advisable to call SERVPRO franchise professionals to ensure effective water removal and drying of your property. We have sophisticated equipment like extractors with a heater, pump, and vacuum system. Our Water Damage Restoration Technicians (WRT) remove as much water as possible to expedite the drying process. We then use air movers and dehumidifiers to dry the affected areas thoroughly.

Our SERVPRO crew also monitors and documents the drying process to ensure that the water cleanup job is effective. We use moisture meters to detect if there is moisture underneath wood flooring and within wall cavities. Penetrating moisture meters can test individual layers while non-penetrating meters have sensors which produce readings when we place them on the surface of materials. If we detect any moisture, we can use an all-inclusive plan to get rid of it completely, quickly, and safely. As we dry your property, we can also look for pre-existing damages like mold growth and delamination. Our technicians can notify your insurance adjuster if we find damage, and if the adjuster approves, we can remove the damaged items like a carpet.

When you experience water damage in your Oceanside, Atlantic Beach or Lido Beach home, SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside can help you to restore it to its preloss condition. Call us anytime at (516) 536-1801 for prompt water removal services. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Water or Flooding Damage? How About Mold Infestations in Your Oceanside Home or a Fire? What to Do? Call SERVPRO for Restoration

Our Comprehensive and Efficient Approach is Why SERVPRO Hits the Mark for Oceanside Disaster Recovery

When your Oceanside home suffers from water, fire, mold, or storm damage you and your family long for the time before the disaster. Mitigating and remediating the harm done to the structural components of your residence is an enormous job, and if not done to the highest industry standards you might see lingering effects that can result in permanent damage in the long term. Our team prepares for all aspects of disaster recovery by completing rigorous training from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC.)

Water Damage
Water damage in Oceanside does not need to have a dramatic backstory to cause significant concerns for the structural integrity of your home and the function of its contents. Small leaks over time might be unnoticed until an unpleasant odor and staining and bulging of walls, or weakened cabinet interiors reveal a long term problem. We have many services available to mitigate the spread of moisture and remediate the harm already done.

Our Water Damage Restoration Technicians (WRT) are expert in tracing water damage back to the source. This skill is vital as unless we discover the site of moisture incursion and help you arrange for a repair, the problems resurface. We use sensitive water and moisture detection devices including thermal scanners and meters to find hidden pockets of fluids and collect data on structural moisture levels to inform our Applied Structural Drying (ASD) technicians when determining drying goals. Thoroughness in establishing the extent of the damage is why SERVPRO can provide successful outcomes.

Water can hide under cabinets and behind walls. We might need to remove kickboards under a sink cabinet or performed controlled demolition along sections of wet drywall to access water for removal and open areas up for more efficient structural drying. We move from water extraction to drying seamlessly, all required machinery waiting for use on our service vehicles to prevent any delays.

Fire Damage
Fire cleanup in Oceanside is a challenge difficult for even the most diligent homeowners to perform appropriately without professional help. The soiling and residues left behind after a fire are incredibly toxic, and the IICRC training our Fire and Smoke Restoration Technicians (FSRT) bring to your house protects both your family and our team when we arrive to assist. Our technicians carry multiple certifications from the IICRC so we can manage the project start to finish.

The amount of water from fighting the fire is often a shock to homeowners. Our service vehicles stock a full complement of water removal and structural drying equipment, a reason why SERVPRO can avoid any delay when initiating a fire damage mitigation and remediation job. Once the water, typically considered Category 3 or highly contaminated, is contained and disposed of according to local regulations the crew is already moving on to characterizing and matching products and cleaning techniques to the different types of soot found in the spaces of your home.

We also have a range of cleaning options to consider when cleaning your home’s contents. Furnishings often respond to vacuuming or application of foam cleansers. Fire residues tarnish metal and get into every crevice of intricate decor and household goods. Our production facility technicians might use unique products and methods like immersion tubs or ultrasonic cleaning to deep clean items and restore finishes. Deodorization of both the spaces in your house and your possessions is crucial, and our employees use a multi-step protocol to clear the malodors away. Our resources include advanced technology such as ozone machines, hydroxyl generators, and thermal foggers that neutralized odor-bearing particles at the molecular level.

Mold Remediation
If you notice a stuffy, musty odor in your Oceanside home, mold damage is likely the cause. Mold and mildews can follow an incomplete water damage cleanup and are often a sign that a slow leak or other unnoticed water incursion has been occurring for some time. It is wise to consult with a reliable mold abatement provider rather than making matters worse by trying to clean up an extensive mold infestation yourself.

We invested in the training of our employees in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mold remediation protocol. Our mastery of the process is why SERVPRO is qualified to help with any mold damage concerns you have in your home. We seal the contaminated area off with plastic barriers sealed by the use of a negative pressure air scrubbing system. The air scrubber also clears the atmosphere in the work area of contaminants, trapping them with HEPA filters and venting to the outdoors.

Containment accomplished, our crew removes the moldy growth by mechanical means, scraping and brushing. If porous materials are infested, we can save them in many instances by using soda blasting, removing more of the mold organism and incapacitating it from further growth. The debris is vacuumed and gathered for disposal per local regulations. We use EPA-registered disinfectants to inhibit rebound growth in the affected area and seal surfaces with antimicrobial paint-like coating.

Storm Damage
Oceanside can expect to see damage specific to its location near the ocean when extreme weather arrives. In addition to the exterior damage that trees, high winds, and heavy precipitation cause to your home, your location near the ocean adds the possibility of storm surge, a situation with which the community contended during the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy in 2012. Seawater flowing like a river down the streets of Long Island brings a whole new variety of flooding contaminants into the mix.

When salt water floods into homes, any wood soaked can suffer from damage called delignification where the salt damages the cell walls of the building material, eventually, the wood weakens enough to risk the integrity of the structure. Concrete can also deteriorate over time when subjected to a storm surge.

Weather patterns with heavy precipitation also pull salt water out of the sea, raining a more saline dense than typical liquid down on top of our homes near the big body of water. Knowledge of the individual circumstances that can impact storm recovery is why SERVPRO is the company to trust. Our nationwide system of affiliated restoration companies ensures that our technicians receive training that covers unusual circumstances. Saltwater contamination requires thorough freshwater flushing before water removal and drying. We take whatever steps are needed to respond to the damage you actually suffer, not a “cookie cutter” approach that misses critical details.

Place your confidence in SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside without reservation. When you call for help at (516) 536-1801, we respond with a customized plan after a complete assessment of your current disaster.

Contending With Fire Damage And Odor In Oceanside Apartments

With multiple effects that can exist after any fire loss incident, many Oceanside property owners get overwhelmed, attempting to keep up with the needs of an apartment after the disaster. From soot and smoke residue removal to deodorization, you need a team of certified professionals that can address each symptom and return your unit to its original condition. Also, apartment buildings are particularly susceptible to spreading effects and damages, meaning that a fire incident that originates in one unit can quickly move to damage several before extinguishment occurs.

While many property owners want to handle the needs of their residence on their own after a loss incident fire damage and odor in Oceanside apartments can become a situation that gets out of control after a short period. Our SERVPRO professionals can provide a fast response to all fire emergencies, arriving with a full roster of technicians certified in Fire & Smoke Restoration (FSRT) and odor control through the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC.)

Air quality concerns are pressing risks for any apartment after a fire. Even with smaller-scale incidents, the effects of soot and smoke particulates can continue to circulate and damage surfaces and contents of a source apartment. Purification equipment like hydroxyl generators and air scrubbers can help to reduce the presence of these particulates in the environment, limiting the buildup on surfaces and materials by pulling saturated air through onboard HEPA filters.

Odors are another concern that can spread through walls and cavities between apartments to damage multiple units. Deodorization involves intricate equipment such as thermal and UV foggers, which can help to eliminate harsh odors in open areas and what has become embedded in soft materials like furniture, drapes, clothing, and carpets.

While multiple effects can spread quickly throughout an apartment complex after a fire, our SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside specialists have containment and mitigation strategies to help. Let our professionals help you make fire losses “Like it never even happened” by calling (516) 536-1801.

We Have The Advanced Equipment To Restore Your Oceanside Home After A Water Damage Disaster

6/21/2019 (Permalink)

We have the expertise and experience to restore your home right away to prevent further damage.

Water Damage in Oceanside Homes can Develop in Different Ways

Having friends come over for small, cozy dinners, holding a child's birthday party, or just spending quiet family time in your Oceanside home means you want to have a healthy environment inside your doors. Walls with flaking paint, carpet edges with fibers stiff from dry rot, and stale, musty odors can arise from situations that need a homeowner's attention.

When we work on an Oceanside home after water damage, we use cameras with infrared capabilities to locate the source of these and other signs of water damage. When we can mitigate every instance of a residence's damaged areas, we can keep it from spreading to adjacent areas. Early mitigation can reduce the amount of restoration required when moisture affects the more expensive elements of your home.

Drying out the house's interior must happen with the removal of destroyed materials to stop the damage from working its way into other places. Our skilled mitigation experts know highly effective methods for every stage in the mitigation process.

As water damage spreads, the odors detected by occupants can worsen. Summer weather can make odors more noticeable. The microscopic substances that cause the odor come from the same materials that water damage is destroying. These materials include wood components, drywall, carpeting, and even the upholstery on your seemingly dry furniture.

Before we use our dry fogging method to rid your house of this undesired scent, we clean the air of any particles with an air scrubber fitted with a HEPA filter. Our filtration systems remove pollen, dust, hair, tiny fibers from clothing, carpets, and the like, as well as microbes. Then, the fogger's mist can bond with any left-over particles and make them too heavy to get back into the air. After this occurs, odors no longer plague the air in your home.

Our Professionals Can Handle Any Size Fire Damage Disaster In Your Atlantic Beach Home

Just call us at (516) 536-1801 and let us leave your home, “Like it never even happened.”

How Do I Tackle Fire Damage In My Atlantic Beach Home?

Time and time again, we learn that fire damage can happen to the most cautious of homeowners. It only takes an electrical failure or an unattended candle to spark a fire inside your home. Even when you detect it early and extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher, there is residue to address. The smell, smoke, and leftover extinguishing agent can all leave your home in need of professional services.

If your home in Atlantic Beach is a victim of fire damage, SERVPRO is available to help. No fire is too small or too big for us to lend our expertise and restore your home. Our fire and smoke damage restoration technicians (FSRT) train specifically to take targeted steps depending on the origin of the fire, the nature of each material that burned and composition of remaining damage. More importantly, our team is available 24/7 and is agile in responding to your emergency.

For organic materials engulfed in flames, such as wood items, they leave behind fine dust that can be wiped down with cleaning solution and a wet sponge. Conversely, polymers, and other synthetic materials require a different approach as their remains tend to be stickier and harder to remove. Our SERVPRO technicians take a close look at the nature of the residue before taking action. Even carpet full of soot can be salvaged when treated appropriately. If there is ever a material saturated beyond repair, our team takes charge and removes it from your home.

Also frequent in fires of all sizes, is the smell they leave behind. Even when your belongings are in good shape, and the cleanup is minor, the lingering odor can be overwhelming. To counteract it, our SERVPRO crew has a variety of approaches to use, including deodorizing pellets, charcoal-activated filters, and even ozone air purifiers. By using one or several of these techniques, we leave the air in your home feeling fresh.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside is here to help. Just call us at (516) 536-1801 and let us leave your home, “Like it never even happened.”

We Put The Flames Of Worry Out In Long Beach After A Fire

5/8/2019 (Permalink)

We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to offer our experience, expertise and necessary equipment in restoring your home.

What to Expect from Fire Damage Remediation Professionals in Long Beach

Fires can cause extensive harm to a residential property in Long Beach, even if the blaze itself seems small and extinguishes quickly. The residues from the fire spread throughout a home on the superheated air currents and frequently through the HVAC system. Trying to mitigate the harm caused by a fire as a do-it-yourself project exposes your home to the possibility of permanent damage as most homeowners have neither the equipment nor the experience to complete the tasks appropriately.

Engaging a full-service disaster restoration company to remediate fire damage in Long Beach is the safest course. The soot and smoke carried from room to room inside your home are toxic and often challenging to remove. The training our crews complete from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) prepares them to use effective strategies that clean up the charring, soiling, and odors post-fire.

A fast response is critical as fire residues immediately damage structural components and contents, and the harm grows progressively worse and more expensive to remediate as time passes. SERVPRO is Faster to any size disaster, arriving at your home as soon as possible with a full complement of Fire & Smoke Restoration Technicians (FSRT) and the products, tools, and equipment needed in our well-stocked service vehicles.

An experienced project manager assesses the fire site and other areas of your home for damage and devises a plan. Our technicians get right to work, no delays needed because of our preparations. SERVPRO crews match soot types with the products, tools, and equipment that best remove each. Dry, ashy residues vacuum and dry sponge away. Thick, sticky soot from electrical fires and slow combustion of fabrics or damp items need agitation and sometimes the addition of a cleaner with surfactants and wetting agents to loosen the coating.

Protein-based soot deposits a thin but hard to remove layer, common after kitchen and grease fires. SERVPRO technicians use solvents and abrasives to remove the highly-odiferous residue. Odor Control Technicians (OCT), our deodorization specialists, employ a range of methods to eliminate, not just cover up, the noxious smells left after a fire.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside stands ready to help when fire damage disrupts your life. Call us at (516) 536-1801 round the clock, 365 days a year for prompt assistance.

Call us at (516) 536-1801 for an evaluation of your water damage scenario.

Steps Professionals Take To Complete Water Cleanup In Oceanside

If water damages your Oceanside home, you might be unsure of the approach you need to take. The harm done by water incursion is immediate and progressive, moving quickly from a minor inconvenience to significant destruction of structural components within just a few hours. Engaging our team of water mitigation experts pays dividends as we respond fast and have the training and professional equipment to take care of all aspects of a water emergency.

Professional water cleanup in Oceanside is the best investment you can make to get your life back on track after a leaky roof, broken down plumbing, or appliance malfunction creates a water disaster. Our team of trained managers and technicians arrive within hours and assess the damage with an experienced eye, developing a remediation plan quickly. High-efficiency water extractors and submersible pumps are onboard our service vehicles, ready to assist our employees as we begin the tasks needed to restore your home.

Even if the electricity is shut down temporarily in the water loss spaces, SERVPRO’s equipment operates with gas motors or using truck-mounted power generation. Virtually no delay occurs between the assessment and the commencement of water removal. Our employees use sensitive moisture meters to establish baseline readings for water damaged structural components. We search for trapped water in building cavities, releasing it with methods such as flood cuts, wanded extractors with extensions, and drilling holes in mortar joints or ceiling tiles.

SERVPRO then creates a drying plan, retrieving air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers from the well-stocked green trucks. We establish an atmosphere of dry, warm air to move water absorbed into porous building materials into the air as vapor. Evaporative or desiccant dehumidifiers capture the moisture for disposal.

We clear away any soiling or residues left by the water damage and employ EPA-registered disinfectants to sanitize the affected spaces. Throughout the project SERVPRO employees are on the look-out for any mold growth, adding remediation of a microbial infestation to the water cleanup agenda if needed.

SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside has the crews and equipment needed to complete a professional cleanup after a water loss in your home. Call us at (516) 536-1801 for an evaluation of your water damage scenario.

Oceanside Experts Discuss Water Damage Restoration

4/29/2019 (Permalink)

No matter the cause of the water damage, SERVPRO can restore your home to its preloss condition.

What to Expect When SERVPRO Helps with Oceanside Water Damage

Inviting a professional water remediation company to assess and help with the recovery of your Oceanside home after a water loss can feel intimidating. Gaining a bit of knowledge about our team approach to restoring your home offers you a solid idea about how the project might impact your day to day life and gives you confidence in our skills and training. Here are some things you might see or can expect.

When water damage occurs in your Oceanside home, speed is essential to the best outcome. Our team is available 24/7 to assess the damage and make a comprehensive plan to handle all aspects of water loss recovery. After sharing the plan, we disclose any adaptations needed.  Clear communication is a priority between our customers and our team, including the people in our office who work with you on insurance and billing issues.

Once SERVPRO settles on an agenda for your water damage restoration, our crews get right to work. Our service vehicles carry pumps, water extractors, and a full complement of drying equipment. Throughout the process of removing the water and carrying out structural drying, we measure and monitor moisture levels. We use the data gathered as a guide, helping us determine when the affected building materials return to preloss condition. We complete drying using air movers and heat to transform water absorbed by structural components into a vapor state. Dehumidifiers capture that vapor for disposal.

We gather information about what caused the water loss -- plumbing or roof issues, overflowing tubs or sinks, storm damage, or more -- and help arrange for or make suggestions about the repair. SERVPRO keeps an eye out for any mold growth during remediation as fungal involvement can follow water damage and suggests adding mold remediation if necessary. The water damaged area is cleaned of soiling and sanitized with EPA registered disinfectants to inhibit any microbial infestation.

You can rely on SERVPRO of Long Beach / Oceanside to help with your water damage recovery needs. Call us at (516) 536-1801 to set up an evaluation.

Have a Fire Prevention Plan in your Long Beach/Oceanside Home

3/29/2019 (Permalink)

The purpose of having a fire prevention plan is to prevent a fire from occurring in your home. Here are some great tips from http://home.nyc.gov/html/fdny/pdf/rcny/rcny_fire_safety_plan_2_emerg_info_sect.pdf on basic fire prevention.

  1. Your home should be equipped with a smoke detector and you should periodically check them to make sure that they work. Replace batteries in the spring and fall when you move your clocks forward and back.
  2. Carelessly handed of discarded cigarettes are the leading cause of fire deaths. Never smoke in bed or when you are drowsy and be especially careful when you are smoking on a sofa. Be sure to extinguish every cigarette in an ashtray that is deep and wont tip over.
  3. Matched and lighters can be deadly in the hands of children. Store them out of reach.
  4. Do not leave cooking unattended. Keep your stove top clean and free of items that can catch on fire. Before your go to bed, check your kitchen to ensure that your oven is off and an coffee or teapot is unplugged.
  5. Never overload electrical outlets. Replace any electric cord that is cracked or frayed. Never run extension cords under rugs.
  6. Prepare an emergency escape route with members of your household. Choose a meeting place within safe distance of your home where you should all meet in case you get separated during a fire.
  7. Exercise care in the use and placement of fresh cut decorative greens, such as Christmas trees and holiday wreaths. If possible, keep then planted or in water. Keep decorative greens away from any flames, including fire places. Do not keep for extended periods of time, as they dry, decorative greens become more easily combustible.

Importance of Creating an Emergency Evacuation Plan for your Business

3/29/2019 (Permalink)

Office buildings are places where large numbers of people stay throughout their day at work. If emergencies occur management must ensure an ordered and timely evacuation. In order to do so, as management you should develop an emergency evacuation plan in which you post in key locations inside each floor of your building. Each employee in the building should be aware and familiar with escape routes. By being prepared your employees will not panic and will respond to an emergency as quickly as possible.

As a business owner, you should observe each room of your building carefully. Find locations for an emergency phone, a fire hose and an extinguisher.

You should always discuss the plan escape routes and aim to identify at least two routes for each room.

By doing this you & your employees will be prepared and ready for action & to get out safely!

Do you Have your Emergency Plan?

3/26/2019 (Permalink)

We native Long Islanders are growing more and more familiar with storm watches and making sure to be prepared. Here are some great tips from https://www.nassaucountyny.gov/DocumentCenter/View/22536 on what to do before and during a hurricane:

Before a Hurricane:

  • Know your Zone: Find out if you live in a hurricane evacuation area by contacting your local government/emergency management office.
  • Have a Family Emergency Plan: Before an emergency happens, decide how you will get into contact with loved one, where you will go and what you will do. Keep a copy of this plan in your emergency supplies kit or another safe place where you can access it in the event of a disaster.
  • Put Together an Emergency Supplies Kit: Put together a basic disaster supplies kit and consider storage locations for different situations. Check emergency equipment such flashlights, generators, and storm shutters.
  • Review your Homeowners Insurance: Review your policy to ensure that you have adequate storm coverage for your home.
  • Understand the Difference Between Watches and Warnings: A hurricane watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within your area. A watch is issued 48 hours before the anticipated tropical-storm-force winds. A hurricane warning means that hurricane conditions are expected somewhere within the specified area. A warning is issued 36 hours in advance of tropical-storm-force winds.

During a Hurricane:

  • Secure your Home: Cover all you home's windows. Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. A second option is to board up windows with 5/8 inch exterior grade or marine plywood, built to fit and ready to install. Buy supplies before the hurricane season rather than waiting for the pre-store rush.
  • Stay Tuned in: Check the websites of your local National Weather Service office and Nassau County's emergency management office. Find out what type of emergencies could occur and how you should respond. Listen to the radio or TV stations for the latest storm news
  • Follow Instructions Issued by Local Officials: Leave immediately if ordered.

After it is safe to return home be sure to contact SERVPRO of Long Beach/Oceanside for all of your storm restoration needs!

Superstorm Vs. Hurricane how it Affects your Long Beach/Oceanside Property

1/15/2019 (Permalink)

What is a Super-storm? What is a Hurricane? Either way we all know that they can lead to devastating damage to both your property or business.

According to www.differencebetween.net here are the differences between Super-storms & Hurricanes:

"A super-storm is a storm system that does not have a specific meteorological definition. It is used to refer to storms that unusually intense and do not fit into any particular category. The term has been applied to storm systems happening in a variety of climates ranging from near the tropics to cold temperate latitudes. Meteorologists began using the term super-storm in the 1990's to describe especially powerful storms."

An example of a classified super-storm was super-storm Sandy which devastated our community. Although there are no clear meteorological definitions for super-storms there are some common characteristics which are typically extratropical cyclones. These types of storms do not occur frequently, usually only once every few decades.

Hurricanes on the other hand:

"A hurricane is another name for a type of tropical cyclone. It is an intense storm that originates in the tropics and can migrate into subtropical and temperate climatic zones. It is characterized by powerful winds that go in a circular route around a clearly defined central “eye” of low pressure which is surrounded by higher pressure regions."

Hurricanes and super-storms do have some similarities which are that they both lead to powerful weather disturbances involving high wind-speeds and often of precipitation.

When hurricane season arrives be sure to contact SERVPRO of Long Beach/Oceanside for all of your storm damage needs at 516-536-1801

Puff Back in your Long Beach/Oceanside home? We're here to help you!

1/2/2019 (Permalink)

A puff back is an explosion inside the burner chamber of your furnace or boiler. Although these types of explosions are usually very small and confined to the burner chamber itself, they can do considerable damage to the heating system and to your home.

Once a puff back has happened you will often notice soot lining the areas in direct venting distance of your air vents. You may also notice your walls, ceilings, carpets, furniture and curtains coated with a film of soot/smoky streaks.

Oil-fired heating units are the most prone to puff backs but proper maintenance of your oil burner is the only way to prevent these unfortunate mishaps.

Puff backs can be extremely tricky to clean up. We here at SERVPRO of Long Beach/Oceanside have a highly trained staff and use Eco-friendly equipment and cleaning materials to get the job done quickly and efficiently, leaving no traces of soot or any nasty odors. Contact us now at 516-536-1801 if your home has been affected by a puff back

Types of Water That May Affect your Long Beach/Oceanside Home

12/13/2018 (Permalink)

There are three types of water when it comes to flooding in your home:

  • Category 2: "Gray Water" This type refers to a source of water that contains a significant degree of Chemical, Biological or Physical contaminants. Examples would be, sump pump failures or water discharge from dishwashers or washing machines.
  • Category 3: "Black Water" This type of water is grossly unsanitary. This water contains many harmful agents & bacteria's. This category includes water sources from sewage, seawater, rising water from rivers or streams, ground surface water or standing water.

Sometimes, Category 2 water that is not promptly removed from the structure may be re-classified as Category 3 water.

Keep your Long Beach/Oceanside Home Safe During the Holiday Season

12/10/2018 (Permalink)

Keep your Long Beach/Oceanside Home Safe During the Holiday Season!

While holiday decorating is all about adding fun, sparkle and warmth to a very special season, it is very important to remember that many of our favorite decorations carry the risk of electrical injuries or fires if not used properly.

Here are some tips on how to keep your home/self safe when setting up lights/decorations:

  • Before you put them up make sure to inspect all lights, electric decorations and extension cor

  • ds for signs of damage to wire insulation, plugs and bulbs. If cords and plugs are damaged, discard and replace the decorations.

  • If you are planning on decorating outside, make sure to use lights and decorations that are rated for outdoor use. Putting indoor-only products outside in the weather can result in electric shocks and fire hazards

  • When hanging Christmas lights outdoors, reduce your risk of electric shock by passing up on metal ladders in favor for wood or fiberglass-reinforced plastic.
  • Always unplug lights before changing bulbs, replacing fuses or making any other repairs

  • If you need to replace a bulb in a string of Christmas lights, make sure that the wattage rating of the replacement bulb you’re using matches that of the light strand. Using a bulb with too high a wattage can cause the light string to overheat which creates a big fire risk.
  • DO NOT overload extension cords.
  • Make sure wires are not warm to the touch.
  • ALWAYS turn off all the lights & decorations before going to bed or leaving the house.

If your home has been affected by fire damage this holiday season be sure to contact SERVPRO or Long Beach/Oceanside at 516-536-1801

Reentering your Flooded Oceanside/Long Beach Home

12/6/2018 (Permalink)

When returning home after natural disasters such as hurricanes & floods you must be aware that your house may be contaminated with mold or sewage.

Here are some tips from the CDC on what to do when you first reenter your home after a water disaster:

  • Try to return to your home during the daytime so that you do not have to use any lights. Use battery-powered flashlights and lanterns, rather than candles, gas lanterns, or torches.

  • If you have standing water in your home and can turn off the main power from a dry location, then go ahead and turn off the power, even if it delays cleaning. If you MUST enter standing water to access the main power switch, then call and electrician to turn it off. NEVER turn power on or off yourself or use an electrical tool or appliance while standing in water.

  • Have an electrician check the homes electrical system before turning the power on again.

  • If you smell gas or suspect a leak, turn off the main gas valve & open all windows. Notify your gas company or the police/fire dept and do not turn on the lights or do anything that could cause a spark.

  • If your house has been closed up for several days, enter briefly to open doors and windows to let the house air out for a while before you stay for any length of time.

  • If your home has been flooded and has been closed up for several days assume your home has mold.

  • Throw away food that may have come into contact with flood or storm water, perishable foods that have not been refrigerated properly due to power outages.

  • Flood water can contaminate your drinking water. Some contaminates from surface water get into the groundwater and affect private drinking water wells and municipal water systems that use groundwater. Follow your local guidance on whether your water is safe to drink

Contact SERVPRO of Long Beach/Oceanside at 516-536-1801 immediately if your home has been affected by water/mold after a flood in your home. We specialize in water restoration to restore your home to pre-flood conditions.

The Importance of Sump Pumps in your Long Beach/Oceanside Home

11/30/2018 (Permalink)

If the water table around your house is high enough, you’re going to have water that seeps into your basement/foundation. This is especially true during heavy rains and periods of excessive snow melt. Depending on the water table and other variables, this can mean either a little dampness or full blown flooding.

That’s where sump pumps come in. Sump pumps are installed underneath the floor of basements and crawl spaces to collect ground water before it can threaten flood to your home.

If you have a sump pump in your Long Beach/Oceanside home, be sure to check it regularly. Most sump pumps run on electricity, so a common issue is lost power. A battery backup is a wise investment to reduce the threat of power failure.

If your home has been flooded due to excessive snow melt or rain fall be sure to contactSERVPRO of Long Beach/Oceanside to assist in water extraction. We are highly trained professionals who will be onsite immediately.

Winter is Coming!!

11/14/2018 (Permalink)

Before & After

As the seasons change and winter quickly approaches frozen pipes are a major concern for many homeowners.  The likelihood of a frozen pipe is dependent upon where the pipes are located in your home and how well they are insulated.

When water freezes in a pipe it expands. As frozen water expands the pipe will burst! This sometimes can cause serious damage to your home.

Here are some simple tips on how to prevent your pipes from freezing inside your home:
-Keep your thermostat set to the same temperature consistently day & night! Sometimes spending a little extra helps you save in the long run!
-Turn your sinks on! Running water through the pipe, just a small trickle will help keep water flow active & helps prevent the pipe from freezing.
-Open up your cabinets! This will allow warm air to circulate around all of your plumbing.

If your home has been damaged by water we have the expertise and equipment to quickly restore your property. Below are before and after images of a home that had significant damage due to a frozen pipe that burst in their attic causing all four floors of their home to experience terrible water damage. We at SERVPRO Long Beach/Oceanside arrived on the scene promptly & immediately provided service to this homeowner.

Make Sure Your Fire Extinguisher Is Up To Date

11/16/2017 (Permalink)

Fires are the most unpredictable disaster that can occur. Fires can start from malfunctioning outlets, faulty appliances, and even the slightest embers that were not fully put out. Think about it, how many different appliances are in your home/business? How many outlets to keep track of?

Most appliances, and outlets have safety surge protectors that don’t allow them to overheat. It’s always good to have backups and safety plans set for yourself, your family, and your employees in case an emergency occurs.

The specific fire safety equipment that is required for office buildings includes smoke detectors, sprinklers, fire alarms and extinguishers. While all of these items are necessary for fire safety and prevention, ensuring you have a fire extinguisher could be the most important. A fire extinguisher is the most direct way to stop a fire from spreading and causing more damage than it already has.

Be sure to check the link provided for the National Fire Protection Agency’s requirements on portable fire extinguishers.

Winter is approaching, beware of basement floods!

11/2/2017 (Permalink)

A basement entertainment room had a carpet ruined after a pipe behind the wall burst and water snuck underneath the wall.

At any point - and it usually feels like the worst - a disaster can occur. You flick on the basement lights and see the carpet glistening. Low and behold there is 2-3 inches of water covering your entire basement. The old couch you had in your first apartment, all the pictures of the kids that were stacked in cardboard boxes, and the custom knit hats from grandma, everything is ruined! There are a number of different ways that water can slip into your basement, such as;

  • Surface water from heavy rains that can pool around your home
  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank
  • Sanitary sewer backup
  • Storm sewer backup
  • Foundation drainage failure
  • A sewer pipe that is blocked or cracked
  • And many more

Basements are prone to flooding, and with the winter months approaching your pipes are in danger of bursting. If flood water is not handled in a timely manner not only will it cost you more money to fix, it will be dangerous to yourself and the people living with/around you. Don’t wait until the problem gets worse, call SERVPRO of Long Beach/Oceanside and keep your home safe!

The Restoration company determines damage;

Once the restoration company arrives there are multiple different services they provide. First they will provide services to prevent further damage occurring to your home. Next they help determine which of your personal belongings are able to be refurbished and which are not. After, they start to determine which structural items do and do not need to be replaced. All of these items are then built into an estimate which includes the cost of the deodorizing process, the repairing of your home, and the cost for cleaning any of your items. To make it as easy as possible the restoration company sends their estimates directly to the insurance company, leaving no extra work for you, the customer!

Things to remember after a fire:

The Timeline of Water Damage

10/6/2017 (Permalink)

A water damage from rainwater causes the floors of this business to flood all around their front desk!

It’s that time of year again for frozen bursting water pipes to cause flood and water emergencies. In our previous posts we’ve explained how to prevent a water damage from occurring, but in this post we’ll be explaining the water damage timeline. The water damage timeline shows how damage progresses with a water loss, and how waiting just a few days to act can greatly affect the amount of damage that occurs to your home.

Water Damage Timeline

Initial water damage

  • Depending on where the damage occurred the water will spread directly to whatever is in its path
  • Water is absorbed directly into sheetrock for the walls and ceiling. The carpeting, or even hardwood floors can have water seeping beneath it, and personal belongings are anywhere from slightly wet to soaked
  • Furniture finishes may bleed, causing permanent staining on carpets.

Hours 1 - 24:

  • Drywall begins to swell and break down.
  • Metal surfaces begin to tarnish.
  • Furniture begins to crack or bend (depending on furniture) and a musty odor starts to come out of furniture
  • A musty odor appears.
  • Coloring from cloth and paper goods spread and stain any surfaces that surround them

48 Hours to 1 Week:

  • Mold and mildew are growing and spreading by this point
  • Furniture warps and shows signs of mold.
  • Paint begins to blister.
  • Anything Wood such as floors, tables, cabinets  are swelling and warping.
  • Doors, windows, and studs swell and warp meaning they will now need to be replaced.
  • Metal begins to rust and corrode.

More Than 1 Week:

  • At this point a problem that could have been strictly sucking water out of carpets, or cutting away wet drywall is now far greater. Any moldy items and wet items will need to be replaced and are likely too far gone to restore
  • Structural safety, mold growth, and biohazard contaminants pose serious risks to occupants.

Tips for Preventing Water Damages to your Home

A flooded basement caused by a slow leaking washing machine hose

Whenever a water damage occurs in your home or business it affects everyone from the home/business owner, to the residents or customers that rely on the space. It could be something as minor as a refrigerator line popping off, or as large as a main water pipe breaking. Whether big or small these damages are a nuisance, and by following the steps below you will be on the right track to minimizing damages that may occur in the home;

  1. Make sure you and anyone who lives/works in your property is aware of where the shut off is for the main water supply. Stopping any further damage is step one in minimizing your costs for a disaster.
  2. Be sure to check all hoses, and pipes. During the winter it is imminent to shut off the water that leads outside, and to be sure that any pipes inside your home do not get too cold (to burst). The most common hoses that should be checked are the refrigerator, the dishwasher, and the washing machine. It is best to use stainless steel reinforced hoses if possible.
  3. Interior appliances and piping are not the only sources that water can come from, storms are a large cause of water losses that we see. The primary cause are shingles on the outside of your home, whether shingles be damaged or missing altogether it is best to check on them regularly to be safe. The biggest water losses we see occur when water runs from the top of the house (through the roof) all the way down to the basement, sometimes without the customer even knowing it’s happening!

The best way to avoid a water damage is to keep a keen eye on the above points. If by chance a water loss does occur in your home be sure to call SERVPRO of Long Beach/Oceanside ASAP. We get you back up and running as quickly as possible and are available 24/7!

What is a “Puff Back”?

What is a “Puff Back”?

During the cold months when furnaces get turned on, one danger is the furnace puff back or blow back. This malfunction occurs when an explosion inside the burner chamber of the boiler or furnace causes built-up hydrocarbons to exit from vents, creating a sooty mess.

Oil-fired heating units are most prone to puff backs, and proper maintenance of your oil burner is the only way to prevent these unfortunate mishaps. Once a puff back has happened, you’ll often notice soot lining the areas in direct venting distance of your air vents. You may notice a soot blowout near the furnace itself. In any case, it will be hard not to notice your furnace has experienced a puff back and even harder to clean it yourself.

Puff backs can be tricky to clean up. We at SERVPRO of Long Beach/Oceanside have a highly trained staff and use eco-friendly cleaning materials to get the job done quickly and efficiently, leaving no trace of soot or nasty odor.

Top Benefits of HVAC Cleaning

The National Air Duct Cleaners Association's  rule of thumb for duct cleaning is "if your ducts look dirty then they probably need to be cleaned". Included in this page is a direct quote from NADCA's website listing the reasons and benefits to air duct cleaning.

Top Benefits of HVAC Cleaning

NADCA’s rule of thumb for consumers is that “if your ducts look dirty, they probably are,” and that dirty HVAC systems should be inspected by a reputable, certified HVAC professional. Below are some other reasons homeowners choose to have their air ducts cleaned.

Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air quality is one concern that homeowners have when they decide to investigate air duct cleaning. In a typical six-room home, up to 40 pounds of dust is created annually through everyday living. Your heating and cooling system is the lungs of your home. The system taken air in and breathes air out.

Through normal occupation in a home, we generate a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dander, dust, and chemicals. These contaminants are pulled into the HVAC system and re-circulated 5 to 7 times per day, on average. Over time, this re-circulation causes a build-up of contaminants in the duct work.

While dirty ducts don’t necessarily mean unhealthy air in your home, school or workplace, they may be contributing to larger health issues or harboring contaminants that could cause serious problems for people with respiratory health conditions, autoimmune disorders or some environmental allergies.

Energy Savings

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and shorten the life of your system. Although filters are used, the heating and cooling system still gets dirty through normal use.

When an HVAC system is clean, it doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the temperature you desire. As a result, less energy is used, leading to improved cost-effectiveness.

Categories of a typical water damage

8/7/2013 (Permalink)

A water damage can originate from many different sources including a broken water pipe, or a severe storm. Once the damage occurs the type of water is then classified into three different categories.

Category 1 is generally considered clean water and does not pose a threat to humans. Examples of these are considered broken water pipes or overflowing sinks. Category 2 water is considered contaminated also called "gray" water. This category typically includes water from a toilet bowl with no feces, water coming in through hydrostatic pressure, or a sump pump failure. The last category is category 3 or "black" water. This is grossly contaiminted and poses a substantial threat to humans. This category includes sewage, water from rising rivers, any outside water source, or water containing heavy bacteria and fungi.
